Fue regidor en la Municipalidad de Lima de 2007 a 2010. Es fundador y actual líder del partido Renovación Popular desde octubre de 2020. Anteriormente, se desempeñó como secretario general de Solidaridad Nacional desde septiembre de 2019 hasta la disolución del mismo en octubre de 2020. A inicios de octubre de 2022, resultó elegido como alcalde metropolitano de Lima para el periodo 2023-2026 en las elecciones regionales y municipales de Perú de 2022. Su posición política tiende al ultraconservadurismo y a la ideología provida. También ha rechazado el derecho a la eutanasia, al matrimonio igualitario y la adopción homoparental. Es uno de los firmantes de la Carta de Madrid, junto con otros políticos sudamericanos de derecha como José Antonio Kast, Eduardo Bolsonaro y Javier Milei. Es miembro numerario de la organización católica Opus Dei a la cual se integró a los diecinueve años. Ha declarado ser practicante de la abstinencia sexual y la autolesión bajo los conceptos de «celibato» y «mortificación corporal» mediante el uso de un cilicio. (es)

- Rafael Bernardo López Aliaga Cazorla (born 11 February 1961) is a Peruvian businessman and politician. A conservative figure in contemporary Peruvian politics, he is the leader of the right-wing Popular Renewal, the successor-party of the National Solidarity Party. He currently is the mayor-elect of Lima, for which he is expected to assume office in January 2023. Entering politics late in his career, López Aliaga was elected to Lima's Metropolitan Council, serving under mayor Luis Castañeda Lossio's second term. Following a failed run for the Peruvian Congress in 2011, he remained a member of National Solidarity but stayed in the private sector. It was not until 2019 when he assumed the leadership of his party as General Secretary following Castañeda's pretrial detention for a corruption trial. At the 2020 parliamentary election, López Aliaga gained political attention as he started shifting his party further to the right. Eventually, National Solidarity failed to attain congressional representation in election. Announcing a presidential bid, he was elected president of his party in order to lead a reconstruction process, effectively re-founding the party as Popular Renewal. López Aliaga ran for President of Peru at the 2021 general election. His campaign was marred by controversy surrounding multiple statements and comments, which were widely regarded by the media as false and misleading, to a degree unprecedented in Peruvian politics. He promoted a variety of conspiracy theories during and after the election, which contributed to increasingly polarize the process. Many of his statements were also characterized as misogynistic, homophobic, and religiously charged. Fighting for the right-wing vote alongside Keiko Fujimori and Hernando de Soto, he eventually placed third with 11.75% of the popular vote. Following the election of Pedro Castillo as president, López Aliaga has been considered as the most visible leader of the Peruvian right, and recognized as the current leader of the opposition. He ran successfully for the mayorship of Lima in 2022, although he was elected by a low 26.32% of the vote. As a businessman, López Aliaga is the founder and a shareholder of Peruval Corp SA, in addition to being a shareholder of Ferrocarril Transandino SA, both train companies based in Cusco. Since 1991, he serves as chairman of the board of directors of Peru Tourism Holding (PTHSAA). (en)
