- Péter Varjú (* 1982 in Szeged) ist ein ungarischer Mathematiker, der sich mit Harmonischer Analysis und Ergodentheorie befasst. Varju studierte an der Universität Szeged und an der Princeton University, an der er 2011 bei Jean Bourgain promoviert wurde (Random walks and spectral gaps in linear groups). Zurzeit ist er an der Universität Cambridge. Er studierte die Konstruktion von Expander-Graphen mit Methoden der Zahlentheorie (arithmetischen Gruppen) und Fragen der Gleichverteilung von Random Walks in arithmetischen Gruppen (mit Jean Bourgain) und in euklidischen Isometrien (teilweise mit Elon Lindenstrauss). 2016 erhielt er den EMS-Preis, 2018 den Whitehead-Preis. He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Szeged and his doctoral studies at Princeton University, where he defended his thesis Random walks and spectral gaps in linear groups in 2011 under the supervision of Jean Bourgain. He works at the University of Cambridge. He studied the construction of expander graphs with number-theoretic methods involving arithmetic groups and questions about the uniform distribution of random walks in arithmetic groups with Bourgain and in Euclidean isometries with Elon Lindenstrauss. He received the 2016 EMS Prize and the 2018 Whitehead Prize. He was also a Fulbright fellow. (en)

Il commence ses études à l'université de Szeged, puis poursuit des études doctorales à l'université de Princeton, où il obtient un Ph. D. sous la direction de Jean Bourgain en 2011 (titre de la thèse : Random walks and spectral gaps in linear groups). Il travaille à l'université de Cambridge. Il étudie la construction de graphes expanseurs par des méthodes de théorie des nombres au moyen de (en) et des problèmes autour de la distribution uniforme de marches aléatoires dans les groupes arithmétiques avec Bourgain et dans les groupes d'isométries euclidiennes avec Elon Lindenstrauss.
