- El Ministerio Público de Costa Rica tiene la función acusatoria ante los Tribunales Penales mediante el ejercicio de la acción penal y la realización de la investigación preparatoria en los delitos de acción pública, labor que cumple conjuntamente con el Organismo de Investigación Judicial. No obstante, cuando la [ley] lo faculte, previa autorización del superior, el representante del Ministerio Público podrá solicitar que se prescinda total o parcialmente de la persecución penal, que se limite a alguna o varias infracciones o a alguna de las personas que participaron en el hecho. Este mismo ente debe intervenir en el procedimiento de ejecución penal, en la defensa civil de la víctima cuando corresponda y asumir las demás funciones que la ley le asigne. Desde 2010, el cargo de fiscal general lo ocupa Jorge Chavarría Guzmán. Chavarría está temporalmente suspendido por 3 meses, desde el 13 de octubre del 2017 y hasta el 13 de enero del 2018, mientras se investiga la aparente ocultación de pruebas en relación con «el Cementazo», un escándalo político. Chavarría renunció al cargo el 10 de noviembre del 2017, debido a su jubilación. En su lugar el puesto lo ejerce Emilia Navas Aparicio. (es)
- The Public Prosecutor's Office of Costa Rica has the accusatory function before the Criminal Courts through the exercise of the criminal action and the carrying out of the preparatory investigation in crimes of public action, a task that it fulfils jointly with the Judicial Investigation Agency. However, when the [law] authorises it, with the prior authorisation of the superior, the representative of the Public Prosecutor's Office may request that the criminal prosecution be totally or partially dispensed with, that it be limited to one or more offences or to one of the persons who participated in the act. This same body must intervene in criminal enforcement proceedings, in the civil defence of the victim when appropriate, and assume the other functions assigned to it by law. Since 2010, the position of attorney general has been held by Jorge Chavarría Guzmán. Chavarría is temporarily suspended for 3 months, from 13 October 2017 until 13 January 2018, while under investigation for allegedly concealing evidence in relation to "el Cementazo", a political scandal. Chavarría resigned from the post on 10 November 2017, due to his retirement. The current Attorney General is . (en)
