- Der Tagebau Profen ist ein Braunkohletagebau rund neun Kilometer nordöstlich von Zeitz und drei Kilometer westlich von Pegau. Etwa 75 Prozent der beanspruchten Flächen liegen im Burgenlandkreis in Sachsen-Anhalt und 25 Prozent im Landkreis Leipzig in Sachsen. Der Aufschluss des Tagebaus begann im Jahr 1941 in der Nähe von Profen. Der heutige Betreiber ist die im Jahr 1994 privatisierte Mitteldeutsche Braunkohlengesellschaft mbH (MIBRAG), seit 2012 ein Tochterunternehmen der EP Energy a.s. (de)

The mine has coal reserves amounting to 115 million tonnes of lignite, one of the largest coal reserves in Europe and the world and has an annual production of 9 million tonnes of coal.
