- Marc Valeri Probe (en llatí: Marcus Valerius Probus) va ser un militar romà del segle i, nadiu de Beritos (Beirut). Va intentar pujar graus dins de l'exèrcit, però sense gaire èxit i finalment es va retirar i es va dedicar a la literatura. A la crònica d'Eusebi Escolàstic se l'esmenta com "Probus Berytius eruditissimus grammaticorumn Romae agnoscitur". Va publicar alguns escrits sobre temes de controvèrsia i va deixar un gran nombre d'observacions sobre les antigues formes de llenguatge. L'any 57 va ser reconegut a Roma com un dels més experts gramàtics (potser el més entès). La tradició li atribueix una obra de gramàtica anomenada , però actualment hi ha consens que es tracta d'una obra força més tardana. (ca)
- Marcus Valerius Probus war ein berühmter lateinischer Grammatiker des 1. Jahrhunderts n. Chr., der aus der römischen Kolonie Berytos in Syrien stammte. Probus diente zuerst im römischen Heer und wandte sich dann, vermutlich in Rom, der Beschäftigung mit der Literatur zu. Nach Art der alexandrinischen Gelehrten behandelte er die bedeutendsten römischen Dichter, wie Lucretius, Vergil und Horaz kritisch; eine besondere Vorliebe wandte er der archaischen Literatur zu. Zu Lebzeiten veröffentlichte Probus nur einige kürzere Studien, von denen eine Erklärung von üblichen Abkürzungen (de notis iuris) erhalten ist, vielleicht nur als Auszug. Verloren sind Epistula ad Marcellum, De genetivo Graeco und De temporum connexione. Seine umfangreichen Aufzeichnungen zu römischen Schriftstellern wurden von späteren Grammatikern ausgewertet und sind so in fragmentarischer Form bzw. als Zitate erhalten. Verschiedene spätantike Werke, die auf Probus’ Arbeiten beruhen, wurden unter seinem Namen überliefert, so ein Kommentar zu den Bucolica und Georgica Vergils und ein Kommentar zu Persius, aus dem die wohl ursprünglich von Sueton stammende Lebensbeschreibung des Dichters erhalten ist. Weitere Werke, die seinen Namen tragen, stammen nicht von ihm, sondern von einem Grammatiker des 4. - Marcus Valerius Probus, also known as M. Valerius Probus Berytius or Probus the Berytian (c. 20/30 – 105 AD), was a Roman grammarian and critic, who flourished during Nero's reign. He was a student rather than a teacher, and devoted himself to the criticism and elucidation of the texts of classical authors (especially the most important Roman poets) by means of marginal notes or by signs, after the manner of the Alexandrine grammarians. In this way he treated Horace, Lucretius, Terence and Persius, the biography of the last-named being probably taken from Probus's introduction to his edition of the poet. With the exception of these texts, he published little, but his lectures were preserved in the notes taken by his pupils. Some of his criticisms on Virgil may be preserved in the commentary on the Bucolics and Georgics which goes under his name. We possess by him part of a treatise De notis, probably an excerpt from a larger work. It contains a list of abbreviations used in official and historical writings (especially proper names), in laws, legal pleadings and edicts. The following works have been wrongly attributed to him. 1.
* Catholica Probi, on the declension of nouns, the conjugation of verbs, and the rhythmic endings of sentences. This is now generally regarded as the work of the grammarian Marius Plotius Sacerdos (3rd century). 2.
* Instituta artium, on the eight parts of speech, also called Ars vaticana from its having been found in a Vatican manuscript. As mention is made in it of the Baths of Diocletian, it cannot be earlier than the 4th century. It is possibly by a later Probus, whose existence is, however, problematical. 3.
* Appendix Probi, treating of the noun, the use of cases, rules of orthography (valuable in reference to the pronunciation of Latin at the time), and a table of Differentiae. As the author has evidently used the Institute, it also must be assigned to a late date. 4.
* De nomine excerpta, a compilation from various grammatical works. 5.
* De ultimis syllabis ad Caelestinum, a work explaining the quantities and other features of word-endings in the Latin language. See J Steup, De Probis grammaticis (1871); W.S.
