- Papežská misijní díla (ve zkratce PMD) řídí a koordinují činnost misií v katolické církvi. V České republice jsou církevní neziskovou organizací. Jsou vedena vatikánskou Kongregací pro evangelizaci národů a zahrnují čtyři původně samostatná díla:
* Papežské misijní dílo šíření víry (založeno 1818)
* Papežské misijní dílo dětí (založeno 1843)
* Papežské misijní dílo sv. Petra apoštola (založeno 1889)
* Papežská misijní unie (založena 1916) Papežská misijní díla pod přímou patronací papeže, zajišťují misijní rozměr katolické církve na všech kontinentech. Nejdůležitějšími prvky činnosti jsou modlitba a snaha o šíření radosti z evangelia. Učí lidi v misiích hospodařit, vedou je k spoluúčasti a respektují jejich důstojnost. Své národní kanceláře mají ve více než 100 zemích světa. (cs)

- Les Œuvres pontificales missionnaires sont nées en France au XIXe siècle. Elles ont pour mission de favoriser la participation de tous les fidèles catholiques à la vie apostolique de l’Église. À partir d’un plan de collecte imaginé en 1819 par la bienheureuse Pauline Jaricot, l'Œuvre pontificale de la propagation de la foi est fondée à Lyon en 1822. Ce sont ensuite l’Enfance missionnaire (ou Sainte-Enfance) fondée en 1843 par Mgr de Forbin Janson à Paris, l’œuvre de Saint Pierre apôtre fondée en 1889 par les Dames Bigard à Caen, et enfin l’Union pontificale missionnaire fondée par le bienheureux Paolo Manna, en Italie. L'objectif commun et principal des Œuvres pontificales missionnaires est de « promouvoir l’esprit missionnaire universel au sein du peuple de Dieu ». Pour y parvenir, elles informent sur la vie et sur les besoins de la mission universelle, stimulent les Églises à prier les unes pour les autres et œuvrent pour favoriser l'échange mutuel de personnel et de moyens matériels. Elles agissent comme un moyen privilégié de communication entre ces mêmes Églises. Chaque Œuvre concrétise ensuite cet engagement selon son mode spécifique. Elles sont un organisme du gouvernement de l'Église catholique et dépendent directement du Saint-Siège. Il leur revient la tâche première de donner une impulsion à la coopération, pour harmoniser les forces missionnaires et garantir une distribution équitable des aides financières qu’elles reçoivent pour la mission de l’Église dans les pays les plus démunis. - The Pontifical Mission Societies, known in some countries as Missio, is the name of a group of Catholic missionary societies that are under the jurisdiction of the Pope. These organizations include the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Society of St. Peter the Apostle, the Holy Childhood Association and the Missionary Union of Priests and Religious. Since 1922, Missio has been the Catholic Church's official support organisation for overseas missions. The Pope specifically asks the Pontifical Mission Societies to help bring the messages of Christ to the world, especially in countries where Christianity is new, young or poor. The societies care for and support the younger churches until they are able to be self-sufficient. Missio raises awareness and fosters prayer and cooperation in the whole Catholic Church, with 120 offices worldwide. It is the only organisation which supports every one of the 1,200 mission dioceses of the world. Missio exists through the generosity of Catholics and plays a crucial role in combating poverty, disease, injustice and exploitation. In March 2011, Reverend Andrew Small, OMI, was appointed the National Director for the Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States. In August 2013, Father Small travelled to Lisieux to collect the writing desk (the écritoire) of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, on which she wrote the spiritual classic Story of a Soul. The Pontifical Mission Societies sponsored a tour of the desk in the United States from August to October 2013. On 26 June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Protase Rugambwa, who until then had been serving as bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kigoma, Tanzania, as the Deputy Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and as President of the Pontifical Mission Societies, naming him an archbishop. He succeeded Archbishop Piergiuseppe Vacchelli. Rugambwa ceased to be president after being Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples on 9 November 2017, with Giovanni Pietro Dal Toso replacing him. Since Acp. Charles Asa Schleck's concurrent appointment as Undersecretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and President of the Pontifical Mission Societies, the two appointments have been concurrent (though with the title Adjunct Secretary):

- Le Pontificie Opere Missionarie nacquero in Francia nel XIX secolo. La loro missione è di promuovere la partecipazione di tutti i fedeli cattolici alla vita apostolica della Chiesa. Da un piano di preghiera e di raccolta di offerte immaginato nel 1819 dalla beata Pauline Marie Jaricot, nel 1822 a Lione venne fondata l'Opera della Propagazione della Fede. Nel 1843 monsignor Charles de Forbin-Janson fondò a Parigi l'Opera dell'Infanzia Missionaria (o della Santa Infanzia). Nel 1889 le signore Bigard fondarono a Caen l'Opera di San Pietro Apostolo. Infine, nel 1916 il beato Paolo Manna fondò in Italia la Pontificia Unione Missionaria. L'obiettivo comune e principale delle Pontificie Opere Missionarie è quello di "promuovere lo spirito missionario universale nel popolo di Dio". A tal fine informano sulla vita e sui bisogni della missione universale, stimolano le Chiese a pregare l'una per l'altra e si adoperano per promuovere lo scambio reciproco di personale e mezzi materiali. Agiscono come mezzo di comunicazione privilegiato tra queste stesse Chiese. Ogni Opera poi concretizza questo impegno secondo le sue modalità specifiche. Sono un'agenzia del governo della Chiesa cattolica e riferiscono direttamente alla Santa Sede. È loro compito primario dare impulso alla cooperazione, armonizzare le forze missionarie e garantire un'equa distribuzione degli aiuti finanziari che ricevono per la missione della Chiesa nei paesi più poveri. - Papieskie Dzieła Misyjne (PDM) – Papieskie Dzieło Rozkrzewiania Wiary (PDRW), Papieskie Dzieło św. Piotra Apostoła (PDPA), Papieskie Dzieło Misyjne Dzieci (PDMD) oraz Papieska Unia Misyjna (PUM) – zostały założone w XIX i XX wieku i miały za cel budzenie świadomości misyjnej wśród wiernych Kościoła katolickiego: dorosłych, młodzieży, dzieci oraz duchowieństwa diecezjalnego i zakonnego. Gdy stały się Dziełami o zasięgu międzynarodowym zostały uznane za papieskie. Trzy pierwsze – Dzieło Rozkrzewiania Wiary, Dzieło św. Piotra Apostoła, Dzieło Misyjne Dzieci – zyskały charakter papieski dnia 3 maja 1922 r. na mocy motu proprio Romanorum Pontificum papieża Piusa XI, natomiast Unia Misyjna Duchowieństwa dnia 28 października 1956 r. na mocy dekretu papieża Piusa XII.Papieskie Dzieła Misyjne są zatem narzędziem ewangelizacji pozostającym do dyspozycji Papieża. PDM podlegają Kongregacji Ewangelizacji Narodów. Do Rady Wyższej PDM należą sekretarze generalni Dzieł, prowadzący sekretariaty generalne w Rzymie. W poszczególnych krajach istnieją struktury krajowe Dzieł. W Polsce jest to Dyrekcja Krajowa PDM, Sekretariaty Krajowe Dzieł i dyrektorzy diecezjalni PDM. (pl)
