- Polycotylus es un género de plesiosaurio perteneciente a la familia Polycotylidae. La especie tipo es P. latippinis y fue nombrada por el paleontólogo estadounidense Edward Drinker Cope en 1869. Polycotylus en verwanten leken op pliosauriërs met een iets langere nek. Primitieve pliosauriërs zoals de Macroplata zagen er ongeveer hetzelfde uit. De verwantschap van Polycotylus en de andere leden van de binnen de Plesiosauriodea is vrij onduidelijk. Qua uiterlijk leken ze het meest op de vroege plesiosauriërs zoals de Plesiosaurus, maar de botten onthullen een verwantschap met de Elasmosauridae. De Elasmosauridae en de Polycotylidae waren waarschijnlijk zustergroepen. Verwanten van Polycotylus zoals de Dolichorhynchops werden zo'n drie tot vier meter lang. Polycotylus was met een lengte van acht tot tien meter het grootste lid van de groep. De kop van Polycotylus was robuster gebouwd dan die van Dolichorhynchops, wat erop wijst dat hij behalve vis ook grotere prooien at. (nl)
