- Peuke (auch Peuce) war in der antiken Geographie eine mit Fichten bewachsene Insel im Donaudelta auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Rumänien. Apollonios von Rhodos berichtet, dass die Insel Peuke ursprünglich durch eine große Sandbank gebildet wurde, zwischen den heutigen Donau-Armen Sf. Gheorghe (damals Hieron stoma) und Sulina (damals Naracon stoma).Die Insel hatte etwa die Größe der Insel Rhodos und verschwand im frühen Mittelalter, als die Donau ihren Lauf in der Mündung änderte. Peuke wurde unter anderen von den Peukinern (auch Peucini), einem Zweig der Bastarnen, bewohnt. Tacitus nennt alle Bastarnen im Jahre 98 n. Chr. nach diesem Teilstamm Peukiner. Der Geschichtsschreiber Arrian von Nikomedien berichtet, dass der thrakische König mit seinem Stamm, den Triballern, 335 v. Chr. auf dieser Insel Zuflucht suchte, als er von Alexander dem Großen und dessen makedonischem Heer während dessen Balkanfeldzug verfolgt wurde. Alexander brachte Schiffe auf die Donau, um sie zum Angriff auf die Insel zu nutzen. Die Versuche scheiterten wegen der reißenden Strömung, steilen Ufern und heftiger Abwehr. Alarich I., der erste sicher bekannte König der Westgoten, soll um 370 n. Chr. auf der Insel Peuke an der südlichen Mündung der Donau geboren worden sein. (de)
- Isla Peuce (del griego; Peuke = “pino”), nombre con que los antiguos griegos y romanos conocían una gran isla de la desembocadura en el delta fluvial del Danubio, Rumania, en la región conocida entonces como Dacia, y que superaba en tamaño a la isla de Rodas. En ella el rey de la tribu tracia de los tribalos, Sirmio, se refugió cuando era acosado por las tropas de Alejandro Magno. Alejandro consideró muy arriesgado seguir decididamente a los tribalios, y Sirmio consiguió proteger sus fuerzas en la isla, pero el sitio y las derrotas de sus aliados getas lo motivaron a negociar la paz. También se piensa que esta isla fue el lugar de nacimiento en 370 o 375 de Alarico I, rey de los visigodos entre los años 395 y 410. No se le debe confundir con la pequeña y abrupta isla de Leuce (o Leuke), actual Isla de las Serpientes, ubicada costa afuera en el Mar Negro, frente a Peuce. (es)
- In ancient geography, Peuce (Ancient Greek: πεύκη, romanized: peúkē, lit. 'pine tree') is a former island in the Danube Delta, in Scythia Minor (present-day Tulcea County, Romania). It was about the size of the island of Rhodes. The inhabitants of the island were called Peucini (Ancient Greek: Πευκῖνοι). It was to this island that in the 330s BC the West Thracian Triballian king Syrmus took refuge when pursued by Alexander the Great. Alexander brought ships up the Danube to use in an assault on the island. The attempts failed due to the swift current of the river, steep banks, and fierce defense. Eventually the Macedonians abandoned their attacks on Peuce and instead crossed into the territory of the Getae. A portion of the powerful Bastarnae tribe (probably a mixed Germanic-Celtic society) settled on the island, apparently in the 2nd century BC, and adopted from their abode an alternative tribal name, "Peucini", used by some classical authors to cover sections of the Bastarnae tribe which had never set foot on the island. Peuce island is also thought to be the birthplace of Alaric I (Alaric or Alarich; in Latin, Alaricus) king of the Visigoths from 395 to 410 who is most famous for his sack of Rome in 410. The Battle of Ongal of 680 also took place on the Peuce Island. The battle was crucial for the creation of the First Bulgarian Empire. The island disappeared during the Early Middle Ages, when the Danube's distributaries changed courses. (en)
