Das Unternehmen wurde 1981 in Cupertino, Kalifornien von Bill Wilkinson und Mike Peters gegründet. Von der Firma Shepardson Microsystems, Inc. (SMI) wurde das ursprüngliche Atari BASIC und Atari DOS abgekauft. Die Produkte wurden daraufhin weiterentwickelt und unter den neuen Namen OS/A+ und BASIC A+ vertrieben. Anfang 1988 fusionierte OSS mit , Inc. Im Jahr 1994 übernahm schließlich Fine Tooned Engineering (FTe) die Rechte an den 8-bit-Produkten, wie dem MAC/65. (de)
- Optimized Systems Software (OSS) was a company that produced disk operating systems, programming languages with integrated development environments, and applications primarily for the Atari 8-bit family of home computers. OSS was best known for their enhanced versions of Atari BASIC and the MAC/65 assembler, both of which are much faster than Atari's products, and the Action! programming language. OSS also sold some products for the Apple II. OSS transitioned to 16-bit platforms with Personal Pascal for the Atari ST and Personal Prolog for Macintosh (which was also advertised for the Atari ST, but may not have been released). OSS was not as significant in those markets. (en)
