Operation Phototrack was among the programs quickly organized in the United States, after the Soviet earth satellite Sputnik 1 was launched on 4 October 1957, to fill the temporary tracking gap until the cameras specially designed to optically track U.S. satellites became operational. It was also referred to as the "Independent IGY (International Geophysical Year) Tracking Coordination Program".
