- وقعت مذبحة وامري الكبرى في 23 أبريل عام 1997 في قرية وامري الجزائرية بالقرب من مدينة المدية في جنوب الجزائر. وقد تسبب المهاجمون المسلحون بالسكاكين والسيوف والبنادق في مقتل 42 شخصًا - من بينهم 17 امرأة و3 أطفال - في 3 ساعات، وتشويه بعض الجثث وحرقها في بعض الأحيان. وبُقرت بطون النساء الحوامل وانتزعت أطفالهن من أحشائهن. ووقعت مذبحة حوش خميستي في اليوم السابق. وقد أثار العنف إدانة دولية من المسؤولين؛ وأعلن المتحدث الرسمي باسم وزارة الخارجية الأمريكية نيكولاس بيرنز أن «هؤلاء الإرهابيون ... يستحقون توجيه انتقادات وإدانات خاصة من قبل المجتمع الدولي نتيجة لهذه الأعمال الدنيئة»، في حين ذكرت جبهة التحرير الوطني الجزائرية (FLN) أن «هذه الأعمال الهمجية تدينها جميع الأديان والقوانين والأخلاق الإنسانية». وقد وقعت المذبحة السابقة في العمارية في 22 يناير عام 1997، حيث قتل 23 شخصًا. Armés de couteaux, de sabres et d'armes à feu, un groupe armé tue 42 personnes, dont 17 femmes en trois heures, mutilant parfois les corps. Cela a lieu le lendemain du massacre de Haouch Khemisti. - The largest Omaria massacre took place on 23 April 1997 in the Algerian village of El Omaria near Médéa, south of Algiers. Attackers armed with knives, sabers, and guns killed 42 people - including 17 women and 3 babies - in 3 hours, mutilating and sometimes burning the bodies. A pregnant women was cut open, and her baby hacked apart. The Haouch Khemisti massacre had taken place the day before. The violence provoked international condemnation of those responsible; US State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns declared that "these Islamic terrorists... deserve special criticism and condemnation by the world community for these despicable acts", while the Algerian FLN stated that "This barbarity is condemned by all religions, laws and morals of humanity." A previous massacre had taken place at Omaria on 22 January 1997, in which 23 people were killed. (en)
