- The Octopus is a type of amusement ride in the shape of an octopus. Five to eight arms attached to a central axis of rotation and move up and down in a wavelike motion, while cars at the end of the arms, either attached directly to the arm or fixed on spinning crosses, spin freely or stay in place, depending on the exact type of ride. - Une Pieuvre (ou Octopus) est un type de manège dont la forme reprend celle de la pieuvre. La première fut inventée par Lee Eyerly dans les années 1930 et il déposa un brevet en 1938. La version d'origine n'avait pas de thème mais évolua rapidement pour devenir un standard des fêtes foraines et parcs d'attractions. Les principales caractéristiques de ce type d'attraction sont : un axe de rotation central auquel s'attachent généralement cinq ou huit bras qui peuvent bouger vers le haut ou le bas lors de la rotation. Au bout de chaque bras, une ou plusieurs nacelles sont suspendues ou soutenues et peuvent tourner par rapport au bras. Au-dessus de l'axe central, un ornement (une tête de pieuvre, une araignée, ou autre) décore l'attraction et peut souvent tourner ou se soulever indépendamment de la rotation de l'axe. (fr)

- Een Polyp is een attractie die men op de kermis en in pretparken kan vinden, bij het publiek beter bekend als Spin of Octopus. De Polyp valt onder de familie van de spin 'n puke en is verwant met de Calypso, Troika en de Breakdance. Er zijn drie soorten polypen, type één gaat niet echt snel en is een echte familie attractie, de tweede gaat sneller en komt in Nederland het meest voor, de derde gaat het snelst en heeft draaiende gondels. De drie soorten hebben alle drie een ander liftsysteem, de types twee en drie gaan hydraulisch, type één gaat hydraulisch en mechanisch. Op het plaatje hiernaast is een type één polyp te zien, de Dancing Monster van Verdonk. Het is een attractie met vijf of zes armen die ronddraaien en hydraulisch of mechanisch op en neer gaan. Aan die armen zitten weer vier of vijf kleinere kruizen waar gondels op zitten. Ook die kruizen draaien rond, bij sommige polypen draaien de gondels ook nog eens om hun eigen as door middel van middelpuntvliedende kracht. Een polyp heeft meestal als decoratie een spin of een octopus boven op de attractie. In Nederland reizen er in 2008 zo'n zeventien polypen over de verschillende kermissen. (nl)
