- Obsession Telescopes is the name of an American telescope company which specializes in the production of Dobsonian telescopes. The company is noted for being a pioneer in economical, large aperture truss-pole telescopes with an ultra-compact design, thereby setting a standard in the amateur astronomy community. it is also the largest producer of Dobsonian telescopes, catering to buyers from many countries around the world. Obsession Telescopes was founded in 1989 by David Kriege and is based in Lake Mills, Wisconsin. In 1987, prior to the founding of the company, Kriege attended a star party where he experienced Dobsonian type telescopes for the first time. Learning of the cost effectiveness of building a Dobson style telescope from fellow star gazers at this party, he went on to build the Dobson style Obsession 1 telescope. Early on, despite the style of the telescope being unique, it gained much popularity among astronomy enthusiasts over time. Dobsonians are designed for use by amateur astronomers as they offer a large aperture yet are both economical and highly mobile. This allows the telescopes to be taken to star parties, where amateur astronomers gather at night to use their telescopes together. Apart from amateur astronomers, telescopes from Obsession Telescopes have also been used by academic institutions and some professional observatories in addition to being used for astrophotography. An Obsession Telescope 25" was the largest aperture telescope at the Custer Observatory in New York State for a time. (en)
