- The Projector, 2.5 inch—more commonly known as the Northover Projector—was an ad hoc anti-tank weapon used by the British Army and Home Guard during the Second World War. With a German invasion of Great Britain seeming likely after the defeat in the Battle of France, most available weaponry was diverted to the regular British Army, leaving the Home Guard short on supplies, particularly anti-tank weaponry. The Northover Projector was designed by Home Guard officer Robert Harry Northover to act as a makeshift anti-tank weapon, and was put into production in 1940 following a demonstration to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. The weapon consisted of a hollow metal tube attached to a tripod, with a rudimentary breech at one end. Rounds were fired with the use of black powder ignited by a standard musket percussion cap, and it had an effective range of between 100 and 150 yards. Although it was cheap and easy to manufacture, it did have several problems; it was difficult to move and the No. 76 Special Incendiary Grenades it used as one type of ammunition had a tendency to break inside the breech, damaging the weapon and injuring the crew. Production began in late 1940, and by the beginning of 1943 nearly 19,000 were in service. Like many obsolete Home Guard weapons, it was eventually replaced by other weapons, such as the 2-pounder anti-tank gun. (en)

Opracowany przez Alfreda Beatty’ego, nazwę otrzymał na cześć majora Home Guard Harry’ego Northovera, który pomógł dopracować konstrukcję. Prototyp miotacza zaprezentowano 3 lipca 1940 roku, miesiąc po ewakuacji z Dunkierki, gdzie brytyjskie wojska lądowe utraciły większość broni przeciwpancernej, a 28 lipca zorganizowano pierwsze próby poligonowe. Do końca stycznia 1941 roku na stanie Home Guard znalazło się 647 miotaczy, a do marca – 1800 sztuk. Do maja 1944 roku Home Guard otrzymała 19 859 miotaczy. Była to nieskomplikowana konstrukcyjnie broń gładkolufowa kalibru 63,5 milimetra (2,5 cala) z prostym zamkiem. W pierwszej wersji miotacz osadzano na podstawie czworonożnej (masa całkowita broni 33,5 kilograma), w opracowanej później wersji Mk.II ze zintegrowaną muszką – na trójnożnej (masa całkowita 36,7 kilograma). Obsadę stanowiły trzy osoby. Do wystrzału używano ładunków miotających zawierających 8,8 grama prochu czarnego, mających tę wadę, że chmura dymu powstająca przy strzale wskazywała przeciwnikowi stanowisko miotacza. Podstawową amunicją były granaty fosforowe . Pracowano także nad zwiększeniem szybkostrzelności. W tym celu powstała wersja dwulufowa i wersja z magazynkiem na pięć granatów. Proste przyrządy celownicze można było ustawić do strzału na określone odległości: 46, 67, 91, 114, 137, 160 i 183 metry, celność broni była jednak niska. Aby zwiększyć mobilność miotacza, instalowano go (również prowizorycznie) na różnych podwoziach, na przykład na wózkach holowanych przez samochody.
