Den Namen North Coast Inland Trail erhielt das Projekt von der gemeinnützigen Organisation Firelands Rails to Trails, Inc. im Jahr 2000, weil der Weg über weite Teile entlang einer aufgelassenen, traditionsreichen Bahnstrecke führt.
