- Nikumaroro (též Gardnerův ostrov) je součástí Phoenixských ostrovů ve státě Kiribati v západním Tichém oceánu. Jde o odlehlý, protáhlý korálový atol trojúhelníkového tvaru s bohatou vegetací a velkou centrální lagunou. Nikumaroro je přibližně 7,5 kilometrů dlouhý a 2,5 kilometru široký. Laguna je při přílivu spojená s mořem dvěma mělkými průlivy. Oceán kolem ostrova je mimo útes velmi hluboký a jediné možné kotviště se nachází na západním okraji útesu naproti troskám opuštěné britské osady fungující ve 40. až 60. letech 20. století. Kotviště je bezpečné pouze pokud vlaje jihovýchodní pasát. Přistání na ostrově je obtížné a většinou probíhá jižně od kotviště. Ačkoliv se na ostrově nacházelo v minulosti osídlení, dnes je ostrov neobydlen. V roce 2016 vyhlásilo Kiribati na Phoenixských ostrovech národní park, který byl rozšířen v roce 2008. Rozloha parku je 425 300 km² a zahrnuje osm atolů včetně Nikumaroro. Nikumaroro byl předmětem významných spekulací a průzkumu jako možné místo nouzového přistání americké letkyně Amelie Earhartové v roce 1937, během jejího posledního letu při pokusu obletět Zemi. (cs)

- Nikumaroro, previously known as Kemins Island or Gardner Island, is a part of the Phoenix Islands, Kiribati, in the western Pacific Ocean. It is a remote, elongated, triangular coral atoll with profuse vegetation and a large central marine lagoon. Nikumaroro is about 7.5 km (4.7 mi) long by 2.5 km (1.6 mi) wide. The rim has two narrow entrances, both of which are blocked by a wide reef, which is dry at low tide. The ocean beyond the reef is very deep, and the only anchorage is at the island's west end, across the reef from the ruins of a mid-20th-century British colonial village, but this is safe only with the southeast trade winds. Landing has always been difficult and is most often done south of the anchorage. Although occupied at various times during the past, the island is uninhabited today. Kiribati declared the Phoenix Islands Protected Area in 2006, with the park being expanded in 2008. The 425,300-km2 (164,200-mi2) marine reserve contains eight coral atolls including Nikumaroro. Nikumaroro has been the focus of considerable speculation and exploration as a location where pilot Amelia Earhart might have crashed in July 1937 during her ill-fated final flight, which attempted to circumnavigate the globe. - Nikumaroro of Gardner is een onbewoond eiland in het westen van de Grote Oceaan dat deel uitmaakt van de Phoenixeilanden en behoort tot de Republiek Kiribati. Het is een afgelegen begroeide atol van ongeveer 6 kilometer lang en 2 kilometer breed met in het midden een grote lagune. De eerste Europeaan die Nikumaroro zag was de Britse kapitein van de walvisjager in 1824. Zestien jaar later bevestigde de van de United States Exploring Expedition de locatie van het eiland en kreeg het officieel de naam Gardner. Deze naam was in 1825 al gegeven aan het eiland door die voer op de walvisjager . De naam Gardner zou afkomstig zijn van de Amerikaanse politicus die de eigenaar was van de Ganges. In 1856 werd Nikumaroro opgeëist door het Amerikaanse bedrijf onder de , een wet die het mogelijk maakte eilanden op te eisen ten behoeve van de winning van guano. Er werd echter nooit guano op het eiland gewonnen. In 1892 werd het eiland bezocht door het Britse schip en voor het Verenigd Koninkrijk opgeëist. Vervolgens werd het eiland via een licentie gegeven aan om er een kokosnootplantage te beginnen. Daartoe werden 29 mensen naar het eiland gebracht en werd er begonnen met de bouw van enkele gebouwen. Hevige droogte zorgde er echter voor dat het project binnen een jaar werd afgelast. Het eiland zou vervolgens onbewoond blijven tot 1938 toen door de Britten een nieuwe poging werd ondernomen om het eiland te koloniseren. Er werden putten geslagen om de bevolking van drinkwater te voorzien en halverwege de jaren 50 woonden er zo'n 100 mensen op het eiland. Een langdurige droogte in de jaren 60 zorgde er echter voor dat de bewoners geëvacueerd moesten worden naar de Salomonseilanden. Sindsdien is het eiland onbewoond gebleven. Nikumaroro is de plaats waar Amelia Earhart mogelijk met haar vliegtuig is neergestort tijdens haar fatale poging de langste vlucht ter wereld te maken. (nl)
