Diseñado por , un futuro , el monumento fue erigido por el para marcar la finalización de un puente que cruza el río Schuylkill y la primera línea de ferrocarril al sur de Filadelfia. El monumento, que originalmente se encontraba a unos 210 m de la orilla del río, se trasladó en algún momento después de 1927 a unos 182 m tierra adentro, donde permaneció durante décadas junto a la línea principal que se convirtió en el Corredor Noreste de Amtrak. En 2016, se trasladó a su ubicación actual, a unos 30 m de la orilla del río en el extremo norte de la sección Bartram's Mile del . (es)
- The Newkirk Viaduct Monument (also, Newkirk Monument) is a 15-foot white marble obelisk in the West Philadelphia neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Installed in 1839, it is inscribed with the names of 51 railroad builders and executives, among other information. Designed by Thomas Ustick Walter, a future Architect of the Capitol, the monument was erected by the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad to mark its completion of a bridge across the Schuylkill River and the first railroad line south from Philadelphia. The monument, which originally sat about 700 feet from the riverbank, was moved sometime after 1927 about 600 feet further inland, where it sat for decades by the main line that became Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. In 2016, it was moved to its present location, about 100 feet from the river's edge at the north end of the Bartram's Mile section of the Schuylkill River Trail. (en)
