- Tom Sawyer Days originated in 1956 with the first Tom Sawyer Fence Painting contest sponsored by the Hannibal Jaycees & the first Tom & Becky contest was sponsored by the Hannibal Chamber of commerce. Originally the event took place in May as an activity for a St. Louis based Educational Television station tour as an activity to add color to the local event for 1200 children from St. Louis traveled to the area to experience. In 1959 those events were moved to July 4th and congress sponsored it to officially become National Tom Sawyer Days. National Tom Sawyer Days is a yearly event on 4 July, organized by the Hannibal Jaycees in Hannibal, Missouri. Hannibal is the hometown of the famous author Mark Twain, the writer of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Many local residents & people from all over the world come to experience Hannibal and all of the activities planned by local organizations. Mud Volleyball, Talent Show, Parade, Cornhole Tournament, Fence Painting, Carnival and so much more! Most of the competitions are inspired from the novels written by Mark Twain, for instance, the inspiration “Frog long jump” is from The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County which is Mark Twain's first famous book. This activity and contest “Tom and Becky ” are one of the earliest activities which were celebrated in National Tom Sawyer Days. Besides, a couple of goodwill ambassadors from Junior school students in Grade 7 will be selected to introduce the local culture in Hannibal. “National Fence Painting” is the same as “Tom and Becky”, which is based on The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Aunt Polly punishes Tom to paint the fence, but little Tom asked some friends to help him paint the fence. National Fence Painting Contest is a three-part event with contestants receiving points for authenticity of costume, speed, and painting quality. Contestants are encouraged to read Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer to put together the most realistic costume. Local dignitaries, distinguished guests, and the previous year’s champion then judge them. The top three placing painters in the local, state, and national fence painting contests receive a plaque and prizes. (en)
