- Moondog Matinee ist das fünfte Studioalbum der kanadischen Folk- und Country-Rock-Gruppe The Band. Es erschien am 15. Oktober 1973 über das Label Capitol Records. Moondog Matinee enthält ausschließlich Coverversionen von Stücken anderer Interpreten, hauptsächlich von alten R&B- und Blues-Liedern. Ursprünglich hatte man für das Album das Repertoire aufnehmen wollen, das die Band in ihrer frühen Phase gespielt hatte, als sie noch unter dem Namen Levon and the Hawks durch die Klubs von Kanada und den Vereinigten Staaten gezogen war. Im Endeffekt befand sich dann aber nur ein einziger Titel aus dieser Phase, Share Your Love (With Me), tatsächlich auf dem Album. Die anderen Lieder waren schlicht Lieblingsstücke der Musiker. Moondog Matinee konnte den Top-Ten-Erfolg von Rock of Ages nicht wiederholen. Das Album erreichte in den US-amerikanischen Billboard-Albencharts seinen Höhepunkt bei Platz 28. Auch die Kritik ließ sich von Moondog Matinee nicht überzeugen, es gilt allgemeinhin als eines der schwächeren Alben der Gruppe. Capitol koppelte zwei Singles von dem Album aus, die beide mit albumfremden veröffentlicht wurden. Ain't Got No Home erschien im November 1973 mit Get Up Jake als B-Seite, einem Song, der bisher nur in einer Live-Version auf Rock of Ages veröffentlicht worden war. Ain't Got No Home kam in den Billboard-Charts nur bis Platz 73. Die zweite Single war Third Man Theme, das im Februar 1974 auf den Markt kam und als B-Seite The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show von dem Album Cahoots enthielt. Die Single stieg nicht in die Charts ein. (de)

- Moondog Matinee is the fifth studio album by Canadian/American rock group the Band, released in 1973. It consists entirely of cover material reflecting the group's love of R&B and blues music, with one exception in their interpretation of the theme from the film The Third Man. In a 2002 interview, Levon Helm described the reasoning for recording an album of covers: "That was all we could do at the time. We couldn't get along—we all knew that fairness was a bunch of shit. We all knew we were getting screwed, so we couldn't sit down and create no more music. 'Up on Cripple Creek' and all that stuff was over—all that collaboration was over, and that type of song was all we could do." The original idea had been to replicate the group's setlists of the mid-'60s when they had been known as Levon and the Hawks, playing clubs throughout Canada and the US. Of the ten tracks, only one, "Share Your Love (With Me)" had been performed by the group in the mid-'60s. The rest were merely tracks the group admired, two of them, "Holy Cow" and "A Change Is Gonna Come", chronologically coming after the group's club days. Rhapsody praised the album, calling it one of its favorite cover albums. John Bauldie in Q Magazine called the re-issued album 'funny, affectionate and immaculately polished' in 1991. (en)
