- El Trastorno mixto ansioso-depresivo es la categoría diagnóstica que define los pacientes que padecen un trastorno depresivo y sufren a la vez ansiedad y depresión, "pero ninguno de ellos predomina claramente ni tiene la intensidad suficiente como para justificar un diagnóstico por separado". De acuerdo con el CIE-10: Una ansiedad grave, acompañada de depresión de intensidad más leve hace que deba utilizarse cualquiera de las categorías de trastorno de ansiedad o de ansiedad fóbica. Cuando ambas series de síntomas, depresivos y ansiosos, estén presentes y sean tan graves como para justificar un diagnóstico individual deben recogerse ambos trastornos y no debería usarse esta categoría. Si por razones prácticas de codificación sólo puede hacerse un diagnóstico, debe darse prioridad al de depresión. Algunos síntomas vegetativos (temblor, palpitaciones, sequedad de boca, molestias epigástricas, etc.) deben estar presentes aunque sólo sea de un modo intermitente. No debe utilizarse esta categoría si sólo aparecen preocupaciones respecto a estos síntomas vegetativos. Si síntomas que satisfacen las pautas de este trastorno se presentan estrechamente relacionados con cambios biográficos significativos o acontecimientos vitales estresantes, debe utilizarse la categoría F43.2, trastornos de adaptación. Este tipo de enfermos con una mezcla de síntomas comparativamente leves se ve con frecuencia en atención primaria y su prevalencia es aún mayor en la población general, pero la mayoría de los afectados rara vez demandan cuidados médicos o psiquiátricos.

- Mixed anxiety–depressive disorder (MADD) is a diagnostic category defining patients who have both anxiety and depressive symptoms of limited and equal intensity accompanied by at least some autonomic features. Autonomic features are involuntary physical symptoms usually caused by an overactive nervous system, such as panic attacks or intestinal distress. The World Health Organization's ICD-10 describes Mixed anxiety and depressive disorder: "...when symptoms of anxiety and depression are both present, but neither is clearly predominant, and neither type of symptom is present to the extent that justifies a diagnosis if considered separately. When both anxiety and depressive symptoms are present and severe enough to justify individual diagnoses, both diagnoses should be recorded and this category should not be used." Mixed anxiety–depressive disorder should only be considered as a diagnosis when the symptoms impede a person's functioning in day-to-day life and/or decrease their quality of life and symptoms of anxiety and depression are roughly in equal measure without the severity of major depressive disorder or an anxiety disorder. Typically, this means that the symptoms of mixed anxiety-depressive disorder are not severe if the anxiety and depression are considered separately. However, when placed together, their effect is strong enough to cause distress and a decrease in functioning. This is what causes mixed anxiety-depressive disorder to be classified as its own distinct psychological disorder. (en)
