- Una ruptura de menisc o esquinçament de menisc és una ruptura d'una o més de les tires de fibrocartílag d'un dels dos meniscs del genoll. El menisc es pot esquinçar durant activitats innòcues com caminar o per la força traumàtica que es fa amb els esports o altres formes d'esforç físic. L'acció traumàtica és més sovint un moviment de gir al genoll mentre la cama està doblegada. En adults majors, el menisc es pot danyar després d'un desgast prolongat. Especialment les lesions agudes (normalment en pacients més joves i més actius) poden provocar esquinçaments (amb desplaçament del fragment esquinçat) que poden causar símptomes mecànics com ara fer clic, o bloquejar l'articulació durant el moviment. Es presentarà dolor de genoll quan s'utilitza, però quan no hi ha càrrega, el dolor desapareix. Es pot produir una ruptura del menisc com a part de la tríada desgraciada, juntament amb un esquinçament del lligament encreuat anterior i del lligament lateral intern del genoll. (ca)

- A tear of a meniscus is a rupturing of one or more of the fibrocartilage strips in the knee called menisci. When doctors and patients refer to "torn cartilage" in the knee, they actually may be referring to an injury to a meniscus at the top of one of the tibiae. Menisci can be torn during innocuous activities such as walking or squatting. They can also be torn by traumatic force encountered in sports or other forms of physical exertion. The traumatic action is most often a twisting movement at the knee while the leg is bent. In older adults, the meniscus can be damaged following prolonged 'wear and tear'. Especially acute injuries (typically in younger, more active patients) can lead to displaced tears which can cause mechanical symptoms such as clicking, catching, or locking during motion of the joint. The joint will be in pain when in use, but when there is no load, the pain goes away. A tear of the medial meniscus can occur as part of the unhappy triad, together with a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament. (en)
