- The May 2022 Canadian derecho was a high-impact derecho event that affected the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor, Canada's most densely populated region, on May 21, 2022. Described by meteorologists as an historic derecho and one of the most impactful thunderstorms in Canadian history, winds up to 190 km/h (120 mph) as well as several tornadoes caused widespread and extensive damage along a path that extended for 1,000 kilometres (620 mi). Three cities across southern Ontario declared a state of emergency. At least eleven people were killed, mostly by falling trees. Power outages affected an estimated 1.1 million customers, and thousands were still without power a week after the storm. Hydro Ottawa described the damage dealt to its power distribution system as more severe than the 1998 ice storm. The storm was the sixth-costliest event in Canadian history. According to an estimate published on June 15 by the firm Catastrophe Indices and Quantification (CatIQ), the insured damage would amount to C$875 million, that is, C$720 million in Ontario and C$155 million in Quebec. This ranks the derecho as the sixth-costliest natural disaster in Canada in terms of insurance claims. (en)
- Le derecho du corridor Québec-Windsor est une ligne de grain orageuse particulièrement intense qui a traversé le sud de l'Ontario et du Québec, au Canada, le long du corridor Québec-Windsor dans la journée du 21 mai 2022. Les orages se sont formés en matinée entre le sud du lac Michigan et la ville de Sarnia (Ontario). Ils ont pris la forme d'une ligne d'orages violents qui a continué sa progression vers l'est en passant sur les régions de London, du Grand Toronto, d'Ottawa, de l'Outaouais, des Laurentides, de Lanaudière, de la Mauricie jusqu'à Québec. La tempête a causé d'importants dégâts, des pannes de courants majeures affectant plus de 900 000 clients et un bilan de 10 décès alors que les vents horizontaux ont atteint de 100 à 144 km/h, possiblement 190 km/h localement. Au moins 3 tornades, dont une d'intensité EF-2, ont également été signalées. Selon une estimation publiée le 15 juin, les dégâts assurés s’élèveraient à 875 millions $CAN, soit le sixième plus couteux événement météorologique en dédommagement par les assureurs au Canada. (fr)
