- التقنيع في مجالات الفنون والحرف والهندسة، هو استخدام مواد خاصة بهدف حماية مناطق معينة في عمل فني أو بهدف التركيز على منطقة معينة في العمل. يمكن أن يصف «التقنيع» التقنيات أو المواد المستخدمة للتحكم في التغييرات التي تطرأ على العمل الفني وحمايته أو حماية مناطق معينة من هذا التغير. يمكن أن يصف «التقنيع» كذلك آلية تتسبب (بقصد أو بغير قصد) بإخفاء شعور نابع من العمل الفني أو منع إثارته (العمل الفني) لأي إحساس. مصطلح تقنيع مشتق من «قناع»، بمعني أنه يخفي شيئا ما (عادة وجه) عن الأنظار. - In art, craft, and engineering, masking is the use of materials to protect areas from change, or to focus change on other areas. This can describe either the techniques and materials used to control the development of a work of art by protecting a desired area from change; or a phenomenon that (either intentionally or unintentionally) causes a sensation to be concealed from conscious attention.
