- Maschtoz (Maštoc‘) (* um 834/835; † 898) war ein Mönch, Klostergründer und Katholikos der Kirche der Armenier. Maštoc‘ entstammt laut einer Familie christlicher Priester. Sein Vater Grigor übergab den etwa Zehnjährigen dem Abt Step‘annos zur Erziehung im bedeutenden Kloster Mak‘enoc‘. Die Priesterweihe erteilte dem Mönch der Bischof Davit von Siunien (sed. 839–857). Um 871 gründete Maštoc‘ zusammen mit der Fürstin Mariam von Gegharkunik das Insel-Kloster Sewanawank im Grenzgebiet der Bagratuni und der Siuni. Als Abt verfügte er eine strenge Klosterdisziplin. Sein Verhältnis zum amtierenden Katholikos Geworg Gałnec‘i blieb nicht spannungsfrei. Im Jahre 897 wurde Maštoc‘ selbst zum Katholikos bestellt, amtierte bis zu seinem Tod aber nur wenige Monate. Der Umfang seiner schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit ist nicht genauer bekannt. Erhalten sind zwei Briefe pastoralen Inhalts. Maštoc‘ gilt als Redaktor des vermutlich nach ihm, nicht nach Mesrop Maschtoz, benannten Euchologions der armenischen Liturgie (Näheres: Maštoc‘). (de)
- Catholicos Mashdotz I was the Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church between 897 and 898. He was a monk of Sevanavank monastery and regarded as a very holy man. While a monk, he was asked by sparapet Abas to assist in overthrowing the current Catholicos, George II, and was promised the Catholicosate throne in return. Mashdotz wrote a long letter in response, rejecting the offer to rebel against the Catholicos, and chided Abas for his attempt. The plot failed and Mashdotz continued to be respected for his piety. Hovhannes Draskhanakerttsi reports that Mashdotz refused to even maintain a diet of bread and water, only eating vegetables. Upon the death of George II, King Smbat I and his associates elected Mashdotz the new Catholicos as they were impressed with him. He was known as a holy man and excellent teacher, but died after seven months as Catholicos. The same historian Hovhannes Draskhanakerttsi was asked by the king to be his replacement.
