- Marilyn Scott (* 21. Dezember 1949 in , Kalifornien) ist eine amerikanische Jazzsängerin. Scott sang bereits als fünfzehnjährige Schülerin mit lokalen Bands. Sie besuchte ein College in San Francisco und trat mit Latin-Jazz-Bands der Region auf. Dabei wurde sie von entdeckt, der sie als Leiterin der Vokalgruppe in seine Band Tower of Power holte. Danach arbeitete sie in Los Angeles als Studiomusikerin mit Musikern und Bands wie Spyro Gyra, den Yellowjackets, , Etta James und Bobby Womack. Weiterhin trat sie in dem Musical Selma auf. Scotts erste Aufnahme unter ihrem Namen war eine Single-Version von Brian Wilsons God Only Knows, mit der sie in die Billboard Hot 100 kam, und der ihr erstes Album Dreams of Tomorrow folgte. Neben weiteren Alben nahm sie auch Soundtracks für Filme wie Torch Song Trilogy und Twins auf und komponierte u. a. für George Duke, Brenda Russell, Russell Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip, Terri Lyne Carrington und . She went to college in San Francisco, singing in both jazz and pop ensembles there. She was noticed by Emilio Castillo, a member of Tower of Power, who hired her to do backing vocals for the group. This led to further work as a session musician in Los Angeles, working with Spyro Gyra, The Yellowjackets, Hiroshima, Etta James, and Bobby Womack. She also appeared in a production of , about the life of Martin Luther King Jr. Scott's first single was a cover of Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows", which was a hit in the U.S. and was followed with the 1979 full-length Dreams of Tomorrow. Her 1991 release Without Warning was critically acclaimed among jazz writers. Her duet with Bobby Caldwell, "", was a hit in Japan, and she toured that country following its success. She signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1996 for the album Take Me With You, which featured Dori Caymmi, George Duke, Russell Ferrante, , Boney James, Bob James, and Jimmy Haslip. (en)
