- Marco Follini (real name Giuseppe Follini, born 26 September 1954) is an Italian politician and journalist. Follini was born in Rome. He was National Secretary of the Union of Christian and Centre Democrats until 15 October 2005. He was also Vice-Prime Minister of Berlusconi's second government, taking office up to April 2005. A former member of the Christian Democracy party, then he joined the Christian Democratic Centre and subsequently the UDC, becoming the national party leader in 2002, after the election of Pierferdinando Casini as President of the Chamber of Deputies. He unexpectedly resigned from his UDC leader position on 15 October 2005, following the approval of a new proportional electoral law by the ruling coalition the House of Freedoms, stating this was not the electoral law he actually wished. Elected in the 2006 general election as Senator, he, along with Bruno Tabacci continued to show his disagreement of Berlusconi's leadership in the House of Freedoms. Follini also clashed with the rest of his party on several occasions, supporting, again with Bruno Tabacci's support, Giorgio Napolitano's candidacy in the presidential election and successfully campaigning in opposition to the constitutional reform approved by the House of Freedoms in 2005, then cancelled by a referendum. On 18 October 2006 Follini officially left UDC and announced the foundation of a new centrist movement, called Middle Italy. On 24 February 2007, after President Giorgio Napolitano sent the resigning Prodi cabinet to the Senate for a confidence vote, Marco Follini announced he would vote in favour of it. On 22 May 2007 he was appointed a member of the organizing committee of the embryonic centre-left Democratic Party. (en)

Il rejoint l'année suivante le Centre chrétien-démocrate (CCD), issu du courant de la DC favorable à une alliance au centre droit. Il est élu député en 1996, un mandat qu'il conserve en 2001. Peu après les élections générales il devient secrétaire du CCD, qu'il mène à la fusion avec les Chrétiens démocrates unis (CDU) en 2002. Il prend alors le secrétariat du nouveau parti, l'Union des démocrates chrétiens et des démocrates du centre (UDC). En décembre 2004, il accède au gouvernement de Silvio Berlusconi avec le titre de vice-président du Conseil des ministres. Il démissionne le 18 avril 2005 pour assumer ses critiques contre la coalition de centre droit au pouvoir après la lourde défaite des élections régionales. Il renonce six mois plus tard à diriger l'UDC du fait de l'adoption d'une nouvelle loi électorale. Élu au Sénat de la République en avril 2006, il quitte son parti à la fin de l'année puis adhère en 2007 au Parti démocrate (PD). Réélu sénateur en 2008, il met un terme à sa vie politique en 2013 et abandonne le PD, dont il conteste l'orientation au centre gauche. (fr)

Marco Follini was van 1977 tot 1980 voorzitter van de jeugdafdeling van de Democrazia Cristiana (Christendemocraten) en in 1980 werd hij opgenomen in het nationaal directorium van de DC (tot 1986). In 1986 werd Follini lid van de Raad van Bestuur van de RAI. Hij bleef lid van de Raad van Bestuur tot 1993. Na de opheffing van de DC begin jaren 90 sloot hij zich aan bij de Centrum Christendemocraten (CCD) van Pier Ferdinando Casini. Van 1995 tot 2001 zat hij in het bestuur van die partij. In 2001 werd hij voorzitter van de CCD en werd na de fusie van de CCD met de Christendemocratische Unie (CDU) in het bestuur van de nieuwe partij, de Unie van Christendemocraten en Centrum-Democraten opgenomen (2002) en was tot 15 oktober 2005 secretaris van de UDC. Van 2 december 2004 tot 15 april 2005 was hij Marco Follini vicepremier onder Silvio Berlusconi. Na de verkiezingsnederlaag van het Huis van de Vrijheden bij de regionale verkiezingen in 2005, trad Follini samen met zijn collegaministers van de UDC en de NPSI uit het kabinet. Dit leidde tot een serieuze kabinetscrisis, maar deze werd uiteindelijk toch opgelost en leidde tot de vorming van het kabinet-Berlusconi III (april 2005) waar ook de UDC en de NPSI weer deel van uitmaken. Follini koos ervoor niet meer zitting te nemen in het kabinet. Op 15 oktober 2005 nam Follini ontslag als secretaris van de UDC uit protest tegen de nieuwe kieswet die mede dankzij de UDC werd aangenomen door de Kamer van Afgevaardigden. Als zijn opvolger als partijsecretaris werd Lorenzo Cesa gekozen. (nl)
