- MV Gardyloo was a specially designed sewage dumping vessel that operated from Leith between 1978 and 1998. The ship's name is an 18th-century word derived from the French "gardez l’eau" ("mind the water"), used in Edinburgh to warn passers-by of waste about to be thrown from a window into the street below.
