- Die Modern Architectural Research Group, auch MARS Group, war eine von 1933 bis 1957 im Vereinigten Königreich bestehende Architektengesellschaft. Sie wurde von einer Reihe von prominenten Architekten und Architekturkritikern zur Zeit des aufkommenden Internationalen Stils gegründet. Sie entstand nach mehreren erfolglosen Anläufen und sollte die Architekten der Moderne in Großbritannien stärken, so wie die Union des Artistes Modernes in Frankreich es bereits für das europäische Festland tat. Die Idee dazu gab Sigfried Giedion, der beim Congrès International d’Architecture Moderne den englischen Architekturkritiker darauf ansprach, Großbritannien solle an der Veranstaltung durch eine eigene Gruppe repräsentiert werden. Als Gründungsväter gelten neben Shand die Architekten Wells Coates, Maxwell Fry und F. R. S. Yorke. Sie wurden durch die englische Architektengruppe Tecton Group unterstützt, darunter zählten auch Ove Arup und John Betjeman. Die Denkfabrik veröffentlichte visionäre Ideen für die Stadtplanung und organisierte eine Reihe von Ausstellungen. Zu ihrer Hochzeit hatte die MARS Group zeitweise über 120 Mitglieder. Eine stark beachtete Ausstellung war die New Architecture exhibition, die zwischen dem 11. und dem 29. Januar 1938 in der New Burlington Galerie in London stattfand. Sie lockte zwar über 7.000 Besucher an, war dennoch ein finanzieller Misserfolg. Im Laufe der Jahre wurden die inhaltlichen Differenzen allerdings so stark, dass sie sich 1957 infolgedessen auflöste. - The Modern Architectural Research Group, or MARS Group, was a British architectural think tank founded in 1933 by several prominent architects and architectural critics of the time involved in the British modernist movement. The MARS Group came after several previous but unsuccessful attempts at creating an organization to support modernist architects in Britain such as those that had been formed on continental Europe, like the Union des Artistes Modernes in France. The group first formed when Sigfried Giedion of the Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne asked Morton Shand to assemble a group that would represent Britain at their events. Shand, along with Wells Coates, chose Maxwell Fry and F. R. S. Yorke as the founding members. They were also joined by a few members of Tecton, another architectural group, by Ove Arup and by John Betjeman, a poet and contributor to Architectural Review. The group's greatest success came in 1938 with a show at the New Burlington Galleries, but it also left them in debt. The MARS group proposed a radical plan for the redevelopment of postwar London, the details of which were published the Architectural Review in 1942. At its height there were about 58 members in the group. The group itself began to lose steam along with the movement and many members left as a result of creative differences.
