- Das Luftsturmregiment 40 (LStR-40) war der einzige Luftlande-Truppenteil und, neben dem Kampfschwimmerkommando 18, eine von zwei Spezialeinheiten der Nationalen Volksarmee (NVA) der DDR. Es ging 1986 aus dem Fallschirmjägerbataillon 40 hervor. Am 6. Oktober 1969 erhielt es den Ehrennamen „Willi Sänger“. 1960 in Prora auf Rügen als Mot.-Schützenbataillon 5 aufgestellt, wurde der Verband mehrmals umbenannt und war ab 1972 dem Kommando Landstreitkräfte direkt unterstellt. Ab 1982 erfolgte die Verlegung auf den Truppenübungsplatz Lehnin bei Potsdam. Die Fallschirmjägerausbildungsbasis in Burg bei Magdeburg gehörte nicht zum LStR-40, sondern unterstand direkt dem Kommando Landstreitkräfte und war somit eine selbständige Einrichtung. Die Bezeichnung Fallschirmjägerausbildungsbasis 40 (FJABas-40, in der Truppe auch als FJAB-40 bezeichnet) trug den Tarnnamen „Huflattich“. Der Verband (LStR-40 war im Sprachgebrauch der NVA ein Truppenteil) wurde am 30. Juni 1991 in Lehnin aufgelöst, etwa ein halbes Jahr nach der Auflösung der NVA. (de)
- The Luftsturmregiment 40 (LStR-40) "Willi Sänger" (English: Air Assault Regiment 40) was a unit of the German Democratic Republic's National People's Army. It was formed in 1986 by expanding the existing Parachute Battalion 40 with additional air assault companies and support capability. It was directly subordinate to the Land Forces Command (Kommando Landstreitkräfte) of the East German Army. Although initially formed based on the parachute battalion, this unit had a different mission and organization. The Luftsturmregiment 40 came about as the result of a change in Soviet tactics based on their recent experience in Afghanistan. These tactics emphasized the more mobile warfare afforded by the use of helicopter air assault operations. While LStR 40 retained in full the airborne capability of its predecessor unit, more emphasis was placed on readiness to conduct air assault operations than had previously been the case. Like its predecessor unit, Luftsturmregiment 40 carried the added title "Willi Sänger," in honor of a famed German Communist and resistance fighter against the Nazis. (en)
