- Die Langhalsaale (Derichthyidae), auch Langnackenaale genannt, leben in der Tiefsee in Tiefen bis 2000 Metern im Atlantik, Pazifik und Indischen Ozean. Ausgewachsene Fische leben mesopelagisch oder bathypelagisch. Die lange Rückenflosse beginnt hinter dem Ende der Brustflossen, Bauchflossen fehlen. Der Anus liegt hinter der Körpermitte. Langhalsaale werden 30 bis 60 Zentimeter lang, sie haben 125 bis 160 Wirbel. Die Gattung Derichthys ist kurzschnäuzig, Nessorhamphus hat ein langes, spitzes Maul, Coloconger, bis vor kurzem noch die einzige Gattung der monotypischen Familie Colocongridae, hat einen für Aalartige gedrungenen Körper mit einem kurzen Maul.
