El Contador estuvo mantenido por una organización sin ánimo de lucro denominada Linux Counter Project. Esta organización se creó el 1 de mayo de 1999, y tomó el relevo del contador de Harald Tveit Alvestrand, que había estado manteniendo el proyecto desde 1993. Harald Alvestrand fue jefe agente ejecutivo de la organización. El trabajo activo se llevaba a cabo por voluntarios. Los gestores de país mantenían los datos de sus áreas geográficas. Le compteur est géré par une organisation à but non lucratif appelé Linux Counter Project. Cette organisation a été créée le 1er mai 1999, en reprenant en charge le fonctionnement du compteur de , qui a été chargé de l'exécution du projet depuis 1993. En 2011, le projet a été repris par Christin Löhner qui a procédé à une réécriture complète du code. Le code a été publié sur GitHub en mars 2015. Le 10 décembre 2018, Christin a publié un article sur son blog personnel annonçant qu'elle ne maintiendrait plus le projet, faute de temps, d'aide et d'intérêt comme l'indiquent peu ou pas de nouvelles inscriptions ou machines. Il servizio è stato iniziato nel 1993 da Harald Tveit Alvestrand, che lo ha gestito sino al 1º maggio 1999, giorno in cui viene fondata la The Linux Counter Project, l'organizzazione senza scopo di lucro da allora responsabile del progetto.Alvestrand è stato amministratore delegato dell'organizzazione, mentre il lavoro di raccolta e manutenzione dei dati veniva svolto da volontari ed era coordinato in base alle aree geografiche, con un supporto tecnico fornito da squadre di sviluppatori e amministratori di sistema.
