- "Life-Line" is a short story by American author Robert A. Heinlein. Published in the August 1939 edition of Astounding, it was Heinlein's first published short story. The protagonist, Professor Hugo Pinero, builds a machine that will predict how long a person will live. It does this by sending a signal along the world line of a person and detecting the echo from the far end. Professor Pinero's invention has a powerful impact on the life insurance industry, as well as on his own life. Pinero is mentioned in passing in the novels Time Enough for Love and Methuselah's Children when the practically immortal Lazarus Long mentions having been examined and being sent away because the machine is "broken". La nouvelle évoque un inventeur qui affirme avoir créé une machine qui permettrait de déterminer la date de naissance et de mort d'une personne en examinant sa ligne d'univers. Il s'agit de la première publication de Heinlein, qui avait rédigé ce texte dans le cadre d'un concours lancé par Thrilling Wonder Stories, concours doté de 50 dollars (919 dollars américains actuels). pour la nouvelle primée. Toutefois, Heinlein estima que le texte qu'il avait produit méritait mieux que Thrilling Wonder Stories, et le soumit à John W. Campbell qui décida de le publier dans Astounding Stories, et paya le texte 70 dollars (1287 dollars américains actuels).. Ce premier texte occupa plus tard également la première place dans l’Histoire du futur qui formera le cadre du travail de Heinlein pour les décennies suivantes.
