- Larry Alan Siedentop CBE (* 1936 in Chicago) ist ein US-amerikanischer Politikwissenschaftler, Historiker und Philosoph. Er war Inhaber des ersten Lehrstuhls für Ideengeschichte an der Universität von Sussex in Falmer, er lehrte als Fellow politische Philosophie am Keble College der Oxford-Universität in Oxford und verfasste grundlegende Schriften zur westlichen Demokratie. - Sir Larry Alan Siedentop CBE (born 24 May 1936) is an American-born British political philosopher with a special interest in 19th-century French liberalism. He is the author of Democracy in Europe and an occasional contributor to several major British daily newspapers, including the Financial Times and The Times. Born in Chicago, Siedentop attended Hope College, a liberal arts college in Michigan affiliated with the Reformed Church in America, and Harvard University, where he received his Master of Arts degree. He then received, as a Marshall Scholar, a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Oxford for a thesis on the thought of Joseph de Maistre and Maine de Biran, written at Magdalen College, Oxford, under the supervision of Sir Isaiah Berlin. From 1965 to 1968, Siedentop was a Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford, but he spent most of his academic career as a Fellow of Keble College, Oxford, and a University Lecturer. After retiring from Oxford, Siedentop was a visiting fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in Wassenaar, Queen Victoria Eugenia Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid and a visiting fellow in Philosophy and Public Affairs at the University of St Andrews. Siedentop was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2004 for services to political thought and higher education, and was knighted in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to political science. - Larry Alan Siedentop (Chicago, 24 mei 1936) is een Brits-Amerikaans politiek filosoof. Siedentop ging naar Hope College in Holland (Michigan). Hij studeerde geschiedenis en filosofie aan Harvard. In Oxford (Magdalen College) schreef hij zijn dissertatie onder supervisie van Sir Isaiah Berlin over het gedachtegoed van Joseph de Maistre en Maine de Biran. Hij was Research Fellow aan van 1965 tot 1968. Vervolgens werd hij Lecturer in Intellectual History aan de Universiteit van Sussex. Vanaf 1973 was hij Faculty Lecturer in Political Thought aan de universiteit van Oxford en Fellow van . Zijn belangrijkste aandachtsgebieden omvatten de Franse Contra-Verlichting, vroeg-negentiende-eeuws Frans liberalisme alsook de verschillen tussen het Franse en het Engelse liberalisme. Samen met David Miller bezorgde hij The Nature of Political Theory, in 1994 verscheen de intellectuele biografie van Alexis de Tocqueville en in 2000 publiceerde hij Democracy in Europe. In 2014 verscheen Inventing the Individual. Siedentop heeft het Europese reilen en zeilen becommentarieerd in onder meer The Times, The Financial Times, en NRC Handelsblad. Interviews met Siedentop verschenen in onder meer Hervormd Nederland, NRC Handelsblad, Elsevier en de Volkskrant. Na zijn pensionering was Siedentop Visiting Fellow aan het NIAS (Netherlands Instititute for Advanced Study) in Wassenaar, Koningin-Victoria-Eugenia-Professor aan de Complutense Universiteit van Madrid (Spanje) en Visiting Fellow in het Philosophy and Public Affairs programme aan de Universiteit van St Andrews in Schotland. In november 2004 werd hij benoemd tot Commandeur in de Orde van het Britse Rijk vanwege zijn bijdragen aan het politiek gedachtegoed en het hoger onderwijs.
