- Katsura Funakoshi (舟越 桂, Funakoshi Katsura), né en 1951 à Morioka, est un sculpteur japonais. Funakoshi est considéré comme un maître mondial dans le domaine des arts visuels dans son pays. Yasutake Funakoshi, le père de Funakoshi, était aussi un sculpteur et bientôt son fils ressent la même vocation. Il étudie à l'université d'art et de design de 1971 à 1975 et à l'université des beaux-arts et de la musique de 1975 à 1977. Il commence à sculpter dans du bois de camphre en 1980. Ses œuvres, qui représentent le plus souvent des figures humaines à partir de la ceinture, possèdent une grande force poétique qui les rend efficaces et distinctes. Funakoshi travaille ce matériau d'une manière personnelle et laisse visible la fois le grain du bois et les marques de la sculpture. L'artiste utilise bien le grain pour la modélisation et laisse une partie de la tête non peinte, normalement la couronne. (fr)

He studied in the University of Art and Design, from 1971 to 1975, and in the University of Fine Arts and Music, from 1975 to 1977. He started carving in camphor wood in 1980. His works, usually depicting human figures from the waist up, have a great poetical effect, and are striking and distinctive. Funakoshi's works this material in a personal way and leaves visible both the grain of the wood and the marks of carving. The artist carefully utilises the grain for modelling and leaves part of the head unpainted, normally the crown. He has exhibited his work at the Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Biennale, the Documenta IX, and the Shanghai Biennale, and his work is represented in several art museums in Japan and other countries.
