- Karel Vlach (Žižkov i Praga, 8 d'octubre de 1911 - Praga, 26 de febrer de 1986) va ser director i arranjador d’orquestra de dansa txeca. Va fundar la seva primera orquestra el 1938. Molts compositors, instrumentistes i arranjadors importants de l'escena de jazz txeca van passar gradualment per la seva banda. El 1947-48 l'orquestra de Vlach va cooperar amb el teatre V + W (antic Osvobozené divadlo). Va gravar prolíficament amb "Supraphon" i la seva producció inclou arranjaments clàssics i orquestrals, així com jazz i pop per a big band amb cordes. També va organitzar i dirigir moltes partitures de pel·lícules txeques del 1940 al 1980. Va iniciar les carreres de cant dels artistes txecs Yvetta Simonová (amb qui es va casar) i Milan Chladil el 1958. Ell i els seus companys musicals Dalibor Brazda i Gustav Brom també van arreglar i gravar molts títols per a la cantant britànica Gery Scott a finals de la dècada de 1950, majoritàriament del que ara s'anomena la sèrie American Songbook. - Karel Vlach (* 8. Oktober 1911 in Prag; † 26. Februar 1986 ebenda) war ein tschechischer Bigband-Leiter des Jazz und der Unterhaltungsmusik. Vlach lernte auf der Grundschule Geige und machte eine kaufmännische Ausbildung. Danach war er als Verkäufer und später als Prokurist in einem Kaufhaus (Kauders) tätig. Anfang der 1930er Jahre arbeitslos geworden gründete er die Band Blue Music, Blue Boys (vorher Charles Happy Boys) und 1939 sein erstes Orchester. Es war an Benny Goodman orientiert und trat mit den (an den Andrews Sisters orientierten) Allanovy Schwestern auf (1940). In seiner Band waren damals während der deutschen Besatzung zeitweise Kamil Běhounek und Jiří Traxler und Fritz Weiss schrieb aus dem KZ Theresienstadt Arrangements für die Band. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg orientierte sich seine Bigband an Glenn Miller mit den Sängern Arnošt Kavka, Inka Zemánková (1915–2000) und Jiřina Salačová (1920–1991). 1947/48 spielte sie im Theater Osvobozené divadlo. Ab 1954 wechselte er mit der Band ins ABC-Theater (Divadlo ABC) und seit 1962 ins Karline-Theater. Aus seinem Orchester gingen viele wichtige tschechische Musiker aus dem Bereich Jazz und Unterhaltungsmusik hervor. Er nahm viel für die staatliche Schallplattenfirma Supraphon auf, sowohl klassische Musik als auch Jazz und Pop. Außerdem war er ab 1940 als Filmmusiker tätig. Vlach war mit der Sängerin (* 1928) verheiratet, die auch ab 1958 mit seinem Orchester sang, ebenso wie . Ende der 1950er Jahre arbeitete er auch mit der britischen Sängerin Gery Scott zusammen. Er starb an einem Herzanfall bei Vorbereitung des Musicals Some like it hot. (de)

Many important composers, instrumentalists and arrangers of the Czech jazz scene gradually went through his band. In 1947-48 Vlach's orchestra cooperated with the V+W Theatre (former Osvobozené divadlo). He recorded prolifically with Supraphon and his output includes both light classical and orchestral as well as jazz and pop arrangements for big band with strings. He also arranged and conducted many Czech film scores from 1940 to 1980. He launched the singing careers of Czech artists (whom he married) and in 1958. He and his musical colleagues Dalibor Brazda and Gustav Brom also arranged and recorded many titles for British singer Gery Scott in the late 1950s, mostly from what is now termed the American Songbook series.
