- John Willard Thorp (20 juin 1912 - 18 avril 1992) est un ingénieur aéronautique américain qui a dessiné une famille d’avions légers tout en travaillant pour les bureaux d’études de grands constructeurs. Né en 1912 à French Camp, Californie, John W Thorp grandit à Lockeford, Californie. Il intègre la Boeing School of Aeronautics à Oakland, Californie, et travaille sur la chaîne d’assemblage final du Boeing 247. Apprenant à piloter en 1929, il obtient une licence de pilote privé en 1930 et totalise plus de 300 heures de vol sur 30 types différents d’avions en 1935. C’est à l’époque où il se trouve à l’école Boeing qu’il commence à dessiner des avions légers. Avec son camarade il construit les Thorp T-3 et Thorp T-5 à l’École Boeing puis fonde Thorp Aircraft Corp à Oakland, Californie. Embauché chez Lockheed durant la guerre, il est responsable des Lockheed Little Dipper et , puis des études préliminaires du Lockheed P2V Neptune. Dès 1944 il reprend la conception d’avions légers avec le Thorp T-11 Sky Skooter. En 1949 est créé la Thorp Aircraft Co à Pacoima, Californie, et dessine pour Fletcher Aviation trois appareils dont le Fletcher FU-24 Utility, avion agricole produit à plus de 300 exemplaires, essentiellement pour les besoins de la Nouvelle-Zélande. En 1956 est créé la Thorp Engineering Co à Burbank, Californie et John W Thorp développe pour Piper la version 180 ch du Piper PA-28 Cherokee tout en travaillant à une version bimoteur du Skooter, le Thorp T-17 Wing Derringer. En 1962 il modernise le Thorp T-11 Sky Skooter de 1945, qui devient Thorp T-211 Sky Skooter et étudie encore un projet de quadriplace léger biréacteur. En 1985 apparaît à Lockeford la Thorp 211 Aircraft Co et en 1990 Thorp Aero Inc est constituée dans le Kentucky pour assurer la promotion commerciale du Thorp T-211 Sky Scooter hors des États-Unis. Il conçoit également le biplace T-18 Tiger dans le domaine de la construction amateur. Ce biplace côte à côte, entièrement métallique, motorisé par 150 à 180 ch, a été construit à des dizaines d'exemplaires dans le monde. Un ancien pilote de l'USAF, M. Taylor, a réalisé le premier tour du monde effectué par un avion de construction amateur, aux commandes de son T-18. John W. Thorp est mort en 1992. Les droits sur le Thorp T-211 Sky Skooter sont devenus en 2003 la propriété d’IndUS Aviation Inc, qui a profité de l’apparition aux États-Unis d’une nouvelle catégorie d’avions (LSA) pour relancer en 2004 la commercialisation de ce biplace léger.

He was educated in the Lockeford and Lodi public schools, and the Boeing School of Aeronautics in Oakland, California. Thorp worked on the Boeing 247 final assembly line and then returned to teach at the Boeing School. Starting flying in 1929, he received his private license in 1930 and by 1935 had flown 30 different types of aircraft in over 200 flying hours. By 1946 he had over 600 flight hours in 62 different aircraft types. Thorp started designing personal aircraft at the Boeing School. As Lockheed Assistant Preliminary Design Engineer, he was responsible for the preliminary design of the P2V "Neptune", Naval patrol bomber. In 1946 the famous P2V "Truculent Turtle" set the unrefueled distance record of 11,236 statute miles (18,083 km). This record stood for more than ten years, until finally broken in 1962 by a Boeing B-52H Stratofortress from Minot AFB, ND. (en)
