- John Haswell (* 20. März 1812 in Lancefield, Glasgow, Schottland, Großbritannien; † 8. Juni 1897 in Wien) war Ingenieur und Lokomotiv-Konstrukteur. John Haswell studierte an der Andersonian University in Glasgow und arbeitete mit 22 Jahren im Schiffbau-Büro von William Fairbairn & Co. 1837 entwarf er auf Veranlassung von Matthias Schönerer, der auch bei der Pferdeeisenbahn Budweis–Linz–Gmunden maßgeblich beteiligt war, die Pläne für die Reparaturwerkstätte der Wien-Raaber Bahn (später Lokomotivfabrik der StEG) und wurde 1839, an Seite des Mechanikers Kraft, mit der Ausführung dieser Pläne betraut. Als die Werkstätte fertiggestellt war, übernahm er selbständig deren Leitung und führte neben Reparaturarbeiten sofort auch den Neubau von rollendem Eisenbahnmaterial ein. Unter anderem zeichnet er verantwortlich für:
* erste dreifach gekuppelte Dampflokomotive Österreichs „FAHRAFELD“ (1846)
* Beteiligung am Semmering-Wettbewerb 1851 mit der Lokomotive „VINDOBONA“, die beispielgebend für die späteren Engerth-Gebirgslokomotiven war
* erste vierfach gekuppelte Dampflokomotive Österreichs „WIEN–RAAB“ (1855)
* Dampfbremse erstmals ausgeführt an der „STEYERDORF“ (1861)
* dampfhydraulische Schmiedepresse (1862), die erstmals das Pressen schwerer Maschinenteile in Gesenken ermöglichte (heute im Technischen Museum Wien)
* Wellblech-Feuerbüchse (1872) 1882 legte Haswell seine Stelle nieder. Er ruht in einem ehrenhalber gewidmeten Grab auf dem Döblinger Friedhof (Gruppe 10, Nummer 1) in Wien. Im Jahr 1936 wurde in Wien-Floridsdorf (21. Bezirk) die Hasswellgasse nach ihm benannt. (de)

He was born on 20 March 1812 in Lancefield, Glasgow, Scotland, studied at Anderson's University in Glasgow and worked for 22 years in the shipbuilding office of William Fairbairn & Co. In 1837 at the prompting of Matthias Schönerer, who was also heavily involved in the Budweis–Linz–Gmunden wagonway, he drew up plans for the repair shop of the Wien-Raaber railway (later Lokomotivfabrik der StEG), and in 1839 became entrusted with carrying them out, along with the mechanical engineer Kraft. When the workshop had been built, the first of its kind in Austria, he took over its management and oversaw, not just repair work, but also the construction of new rolling stock for the railway. Inter alia he was responsible for:
* the first six-coupled steam locomotive in Austria (1846)
* participating in the Semmering competition in 1851 with the locomotive , a model for the subsequent Engerth mountain locomotives
* the first eight-coupled, steam locomotive in Austria (1855), the pattern for heavy freight locomotives on the continent for many years
* the steam brake first used on the (1861)
* the first four-cylinder locomotive, the DUPLEX (1861)
* the hydraulic forging press (1862), that first enabled the forging of heavy machine components in dies (today at the Vienna Museum of Technology)
* Corrugated iron firebox (1872) In 1882 Haswell resigned from his position. He died on 8 June 1897 in Vienna and rests in a grave dedicated to his honour at the Döbling Cemetery (Group 10, number 1) in Vienna. (en)
