- Joanne Chory (Methuen, 19 de març de 1955), és biòloga i genetista de plantes nord-americana. Chory és professora i directora del Laboratori de Biologia Molecular i Cel·lular de les Plantes, a l' i investigadora de l'. Joanne Chory dirigeix l'Iniciativa de plantes d'aprofitament (HPI; Del angles: Harnessing Plants Initiative ) de l'Institut Salk, un innovador enfocament d'eliminació de diòxid de carboni per combatre el canvi climàtic optimitzant la capacitat natural d'una planta per captar i emmagatzemar diòxid de carboni i adaptar-se a les diferents condicions climàtiques. März 1955 in Methuen, Massachusetts, Vereinigte Staaten) ist eine US-amerikanische Pflanzenbiologin am Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Kalifornien, und der University of California, San Diego. Chory erwarb am Oberlin College (Ohio) einen Bachelor in Biologie und bei an der University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign einen Ph.D. in Biochemie. Als Postdoktorandin arbeitete sie ab 1984 bei (* 1945) und Gerald R. Fink an der Harvard Medical School. 1988 erhielt Chory am Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Kalifornien eine eigene Arbeitsgruppe (Assistant Professor, 1994 Associate Professor). Seit 1992 hat sie zusätzlich eine Professur (Adjunct Professor) an der University of California, San Diego. Seit 1997 forscht sie zusätzlich für das Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Seit 1998 hat sie am Salk Institute eine ordentliche Professur für Pflanzenbiologie und leitet das dortige Institut für Pflanzenbiologie. Chory konnte wegweisende Arbeiten zur Genetik und Molekularbiologie der Photomorphogenese und ihrer Beeinflussung durch Photorezeptoren und deren Signaltransduktion erbringen. In ihrer Arbeitsgruppe wurde Brassinolid, ein pflanzliches Steroidhormon, entdeckt, das die Antwort von Pflanzen auf Licht vermittelt, und es wurde der zugehörige Hormonrezeptor und sein Signalweg identifiziert. Chory konnte wesentlich zum Verständnis der Auxine beitragen, einer weiteren Gruppe von Pflanzenhormonen. - Joanne Chory is an American plant biologist and geneticist. Chory is a professor and director of the Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory, at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She leads the Salk Institute’s Harnessing Plants Initiative (HPI), an innovative carbon dioxide removal approach to fight climate change by optimizing a plant’s natural ability to capture and store carbon dioxide and adapt to different climate conditions. Chory and the HPI team aims to help plants grow bigger and stronger root systems that can absorb larger amounts of carbon by burying it in the ground in the form of suberin, a naturally occurring substance. Considered the most influential plant biologist of the modern era and one of the greatest scientific innovators of our time, Chory's 30 years of work has pioneered the use of molecular genetics to study how plants change their shape and size to optimize photosynthesis and growth for different environments. Chory was elected as a foreign member of the Royal Society in 2011 and is the recipient of the 2018 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences and the 2019 Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research. She holds the Howard H. and Maryam R. Newman Chair in Plant Biology. She is also an adjunct professor in the Section of Cell and Developmental Biology, UC San Diego.
