Zu seinen Pionierleistungen gehörte u. a. die erstmalige vollständige Sequenzierung des Genoms eines Lebewesens, des Bakteriums Haemophilus influenzae, im Jahre 1995. Einer Forschergruppe des Instituts gelang 2007 zudem erstmals, das Erbmaterial eines Bakteriums komplett synthetisch herzustellen, das als Mycoplasma genitalium JCVI-1.0 bezeichnet wurde. (de)
- The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) is a non-profit genomics research institute founded by J. Craig Venter, Ph.D. in October 2006. The institute was the result of consolidating four organizations: the Center for the Advancement of Genomics, The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR), the Institute for Biological Energy Alternatives, and the J. Craig Venter Science Foundation Joint Technology Center. It has facilities in Rockville, Maryland and La Jolla, California. The institute studies the societal implications of genomics in addition to genomics itself. The institute's research involves genomic medicine; environmental genomic analysis; clean energy; synthetic biology; and ethics, law, and economics. The institute employs over 200 people, including Nobel laureate Hamilton Smith. It was sold to the University of California, San Diego in 2022. (en)

Trabajan en el instituto alrededor de 400 personas, incluyendo al premio Nobel Hamilton Smith. El 21 de mayo de 2010 el instituto consiguió el hito de trasplantar la versión sintética del genoma de una especie de bacteria a otra y que esta última se autorreplicase bajo el control del ADN trasplantado. Craig Venter é um instituto sem fins lucrativos fundado pelo investigador do genoma Craig Venter, em Outubro de 2006, como resultado da fusão de quatro organizações: o Centro para o Progresso da genética, Instituto de Pesquisa Genética, o Instituto para Alternativas Biológicas de Energia, e o Centro de tecnologias conjuntas da Fundação J. Craig Venter. Tem centros de pesquisa em Rockville, Maryland e La Jolla, Califórnia. A 20 de Maio de 2010, o instituto anunciou a criação do primeiro organismo vivo com genoma totalmente sintético, desenvolvido artificialmente a partir de compostos químicos. Para tal,a equipa, da qual faziam parte o próprio Venter, Clive Huntchison e o famoso Hamilton Smith, copiou quase integralmente o genoma da bactéria orgânica M. capricolum e translado-o para um exemplar dessa bactéria. A equipa conseguiu com sucesso assegurar a reprodução dessa primeira espécie sintética, assim como a produção de certas novas proteínas por parte dessa mesma espécie. (pt)
