| - The International Standard Music Number or ISMN (ISO 10957) is a ten-character alphanumeric identifier for printed music developed by ISO. It consists of four blocks: the prefix M to distinguish it from ISBNs, a block to identify the publisher, another to identify the item and one final check digit. The TC 46/SC 9 is responsible for the standard.
A publication may be assigned both an ISBN and an ISMN. Unlike the ISBN, the ISMN does not segregate publishers by country.
To calculate the check digit, each digit of the ISMN is multiplied by a weight, alternating 3 and 1 left to right. The letter M counts as 3. These weighted digits are added together. The check digit is the integer between 0 and 9 which makes the sum a multiple of 10.
For instance, for the item with ISMN beginning M-060-11561:
3xM + 1x0 + 3x6 + 1x0 + 3x1 + 1x1 + 3x5 + 1x6 + 3x1 =
9 + 0 + 18 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 15 + 6 + 3 = 55

Pour calculer la clé de contrôle, chaque caractère de l'ISMN est multiplié par un poids, alternativement 3 et 1 de gauche à droite. La lettre M prend la valeur arbitraire 3. On additionne ensuite ces produits. La clé de contrôle est l'entier compris entre 0 et 9 qui permet à la somme d'atteindre le prochain multiple de 10.
Par exemple, pour l'ISMN commençant par M-060-11561:

- ISMN of International Standard Music Number is een internationaal identificatiesysteem voor bladmuziek (partituren, songteksten met muziek, songbooks, enz.). Dit systeem is in 1994 ingevoerd en is vergelijkbaar met het ISBN voor boeken. Het ISMN wordt o.a. gebruikt in catalogi van muziekbibliotheken en muziekuitgeverijen, zoals het ISBN wordt gebruikt in catalogi van bibliotheken en uitgeverijen.
Het systeem is beschreven in de internationale norm ISO 10957:1993.
Een ISMN is tien tekens lang en bestaat uit vier delen:
# de letter "M"
# de identificatiecode van de muziekuitgever (door het ISMN-bureau toegekend)
# de identificatie van de bladmuziek (door de uitgever zelf toegekend)
# een controlecijfer (check digit)
Bij het schrijven worden deze door streepjes gescheiden, dus bv. M-2306-7118-7.
Zoals bij ISBN kunnen de tweede en derde groep variëren in lengte. Uitgeverijen die slechts weinig publiceren krijgen een langere uitgeverscode dan uitgeverijen die veel publiceren; een uitgeverij met een code van drie cijfers kan tot 100.000 publicaties nummeren; met een code van vier cijfers is dit beperkt tot 10.000, enz.
Eveneens zoals bij ISBN kunnen ISMN's in streepjescodes verwerkt worden: als "landcode" voor de streepjescode is de prefix 979 gereserveerd (voor ISBN is dit 978 en voor ISSN is dit 977).
ISMN-nummers worden uitgereikt door nationale ISMN-bureaus, of, bij gebrek daaraan, door het International ISMN Agency. Dit agentschap is gevestigd bij de Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, in Berlijn (Duitsland). Website: .
