- In the Russian Empire, inorodtsy (Russian: иноро́дцы) (singular: inorodets (Russian: инородец), Literally meaning "of different descent/nation", "of foreign (alien) origin") was a special ethnicity-based category of population. Informally, the term referred to non-Russian population of the empire (other than the triune Russian nation of Great Russians, Little Russians, Byelorussians). In strict legal sense, it referred to certain indigenous ethnicities of non-European descent specifically listed in the corresponding code of law. The term is sometimes translated as allogeneous (people) (cf. "allogenes") and sometimes as "aliens". The latter translation is misleading since in most cases the term was applied to the indigenous population of Siberia, Central Asia, and Russian Far East. Initially, a legal statute was introduced for special treatment of certain peoples of Russia (including a certain degree of protection for their traditional life) for which some laws of the empire were deemed inappropriate. Over time, the term acquired a pejorative connotation of "lacking culture, uncivilized peoples". Privileges and special treatment for inorodtsy varied depending on the group, area, and time period, but often included exemption of military service, reduction or exemption of taxes, protection of grazing lands, and religious and governmental self-administration. Informalmente, il termine si riferiva alla popolazione non russa dell'Impero (diversa dalla nazione trina russa di Grandi russi, Piccoli russi, Bielorussi). - Inorodtsy (Russisch: инородцы) is een Russisch woord dat letterlijk "andere oorsprong" betekent (ino = ander; rod = geboorte/oorsprong) en tussen 1822 en 1917 door de Russische overheid gebruikt werd om inheemse volken aan te duiden in Siberië die werden gedwongen om de jasak (belasting in natura) te betalen binnen de gebieden die waren geannexeerd door de Russische overheden. Informeel werden er echter alle niet-Slavische volken mee aangeduid in het Russische Rijk. Historici hebben gewezen op het feit dat tegen het einde van de 19e eeuw, en met name na de instelling van de doema in 1906, de informele term de formele term grotendeels had vervangen. (nl)

В обиходном словоупотреблении термин применялся ко всем подданным Российской империи неславянского происхождения, но формально-юридически он относился лишь к явно перечисленным в законе этническим группам (некоторых народов азиатского происхождения). Например Сибирские инородцы, юридически, разделялись на осёдлых, кочевых и бродячих (ловцы).
