- Els ilvats (en llatí ilvates) eren un tribu lígur que només menciona Titus Livi. En parla per primer cop quan diu que l'any 200 aC es van aliar amb els ínsubres i els cenomans per lluitar contra els romans que havien establert colònies a Piacenza i Cremona. El 197 aC encara es resistien quan els seus aliats de la Gàl·lia Transpadana ja s'havien rendit, però aquell mateix any el cònsol Quint Minuci Rufus els va vèncer i el seu nom ja no torna a aparèixer. Pel que en diu Titus Livi, se suposa que vivien a les vessants nord dels Apenins, al nord del Po, a la regió de Clastidium (Casteggio). El seu nom, com el d'altres tribus lígurs no el menciona cap dels historiadors a partir del temps d'August. Alguns erudits proposen identificar-los amb els (eleates) sobre els que el cònsol Marc Fulvi Nobílior va celebrar un triomf l'any 159 aC segons diuen els Fasti, i que Plini el Vell anomena veleiats (veleiates). - The Ilvates were a Ligurian tribe, whose name is found only in the writings of Livy. He mentions them first as taking up arms in 200 BCE, in concert with the Gaulish tribes of the Insubres and Cenomani, to destroy the Roman colonies of Placentia (modern Piacenza) and Cremona. They are again noticed three years later as being still in arms, after the submission of their Transpadane allies; but in the course of that year's campaign (197 BCE) they were reduced by the consul Quintus Minucius Rufus, and their name does not again appear in history. (Liv. xxx. 10, xxxi. 29, 30.) From the circumstances here related, it is clear that they dwelt on the north slopes of the Apennines, towards the plains of the Padus (modern Po River), and apparently not very far from Clastidium (modern Casteggio); but we cannot determine with certainty either the position or extent of their territory. Their name, like those of most of the Ligurian tribes mentioned by Livy, had disappeared in the Augustan age, and is not found in any of the ancient geographers. Charles Athanase Walckenaer, however, supposed the over whom the consul Marcus Fulvius Nobilior celebrated a triumph in 159 BCE and who are in all probability the same people with the of Pliny, to be identical also with the Ilvates of Livy; but this cannot be assumed without further proof. Vengono citati, nel 200 a.C., insieme agli Insubri e ai Cenomani, come distruttori delle colonie romane di Placentia (l'attuale Piacenza) e Cremona. Sono nuovamente menzionati nel 197 a.C., dopo la sottomissione ai loro alleati transpadani; nel corso di quelle campagne furono sconfitti dalle truppe del console Quinto Minucio Rufo, ed il loro nome non apparve più nella storia. Da quanto raccontato, appare chiaro che si stabilirono sulle pendici nord dell'Appennino, verso la pianura del Padus (l'attuale fiume Po), e presumibilmente non molto lontano da Clastidium (l'attuale Casteggio); non è comunque possibile stabilire con certezza sia la posizione che l'estensione del territorio da loro occupato. Il loro nome, come quello della maggior parte delle tribù liguri menzionate da Tito Livio, sparì nel periodo augusteo, e non si ritrova riportato da nessun altro geografo o storico. Charles Athanase Walckenaer suppose comunque che gli Eleates, sui quali Marco Fulvio Nobiliore celebrò il trionfo nel 159 a.C., ed i Veleiates descritti da Plinio il Vecchio, erano le stesse genti chiamate Ilvates da Tito Livio.
