Sie ist eine Designphilosophie für Software, Ausrüstung und den Verfahrensablauf. Teil 1 wurde 1995 durch ISA freigegeben. ISA-88 wurde durch die IEC als IEC 61512 übernommen. Die Norm ist in Deutschland als DIN-Norm DIN EN 61512 veröffentlicht. Basierend auf ISA-88 existiert mit ISA-95 auch eine Norm für die Unternehmens- und Betriebsleitebene. (de)

It is not a standard for software, it is equally applicable to manual processes. It was approved by the ISA in 1995 and updated in 2010. Its original version was adopted by the IEC in 1997 as IEC 61512-1. The current parts of the S88 standard include:

* ISA-TR88.00.02-2015 Machine and Unit States: An Implementation Example of ISA-88 S88 provides a consistent set of standards and terminology for batch control and defines the physical model, procedures, and recipes. The standard sought to address the following problems: lack of a universal model for batch control, difficulty in communicating user requirement, integration among batch automation suppliers, difficulty in batch control configuration. The standard defines a process model which consists of a process which consists of an ordered set of process stages which consist of an ordered set of process operations which consist of an ordered set of process actions. The physical model begins with the enterprise which may contain a site which may contain areas which may contain process cells which must contain a unit which may contain equipment modules which may contain control modules. Some of these levels may be excluded, but not the Unit. The procedural control model consists of recipe procedures which consist of an ordered set of unit procedures which consist of an ordered set of operations which consist of an ordered set of phases. Some of these levels may be excluded. Recipes can have the following types: general, site, master, control. The contents of the recipe include: header, formula, equipment requirements, procedure, and other information required to make the recipe. (en)
- ANSI/ISA-88.00.0x est une norme américaine développée par l'ISA au sein du comité ISA88.Elle est également publiée comme norme internationale CEI 61512 par la CEI au sein du comité SC65A. La mission initiale du comité ISA88 était de « définir des standards et pratiques recommandés pour la conception et la spécification des systèmes de contrôle des procédés de fabrication par lots (batch) mis en œuvre dans les industries de process ». Le périmètre de la norme s'est depuis étoffé dans la pratique avec la définition de modèles de données pour l'interopérabilité entre systèmes et la structuration des données de production ainsi que la spécification des transformations physico-chimiques du produit, établissant le lien avec le PLM (Product Lifecycle Management). La pratique réelle, les évolutions en cours et l'absence de standards équivalents la positionne comme référence universelle pour la conception fonctionnelle du contrôle de tous les procédés industriels au-delà des procédés de type « batch ».
