- 6rd, també conegut com a IPv6 rapid deployment és un mecanisme per facilitar el desplegament ràpid d'IPv6 utilitzant les infraestructures actuals d'IPv4 dels proveïdors d'Internet. Deriva de 6to4, un mecanisme anterior per transportar paquets IPv6 per la xarxa IPv4, amb el canvi significatiu que funciona totalment dins de la xarxa del proveïdor d'Internet de l'usuari final, i així evitar els problemes arquitectònics inherents al disseny original de 6to4. Es basiert auf den Ideen von 6to4, benutzt jedoch keinen speziellen Adressbereich, sondern den IPv6-Adressbereich des Providers, so dass es zu keinen Erreichbarkeitsproblemen kommt, unter denen 6to4 bisweilen zu leiden hatte. 6rd wurde von Rémi Després Ende 2007/Anfang 2008 bei dem französischen ISP free entwickelt. - 6rd is a mechanism to facilitate IPv6 rapid deployment across IPv4 infrastructures of Internet service providers (ISPs). It is derived from 6to4, a preexisting mechanism to transfer IPv6 packets over the IPv4 network, with the significant change that it operates entirely within the end-user's ISP's network, thus avoiding the major architectural problems inherent in the original design of 6to4. The name 6rd is a reference to both the rapid deployments of IPv6 it makes possible and, informally, the initials (RD) of its inventor, Rémi Després. A description of 6rd principles and of how they were first used by Free is published in RFC 5569. The detailed 6rd specification prepared for standardization in the IETF is available as RFC 5969. - 6rd (IPv6 Rapid Deployment) est un système permettant de faire transiter des paquets IPv6 sur un réseau IPv4. Il repose sur les mécanismes mis en place pour le 6to4 classique mais diffère notamment par l'utilisation d'un préfixe IPv6 spécifique au fournisseur d'accès (à la place du préfixe global 6to4 2002::/16). Ce protocole a été mis au point en 2007 par Rémi Després, un des concepteurs de Transpac. Une description ainsi qu'un exemple de déploiement du protocole au sein du FAI Free ont été publiés en janvier 2010 par l'IETF dans la RFC 5569. En se basant sur cette publication, le groupe de travail softwires de l'IETF a entrepris l'élaboration des spécifications du protocole en vue de son intégration dans la procédure de normalisation.
