- The Histoire ancienne jusqu'à César ("Ancient history until Caesar") is the first medieval French prose compilation of stories of antiquity, mostly consisting of the so-called Matter of Troy and of Rome, besides text from the Bible and other histories. Composed in the early 13th century in northern France, it told the history of the world from the creation to the time of Julius Caesar. Often copied, it underwent an important redaction in Italy in the 14th century; its influence extended into the Renaissance. In manuscripts from the 14th and 15th centuries it was frequently found together with the Faits des Romains, which continued the history of the Roman Empire. (en)

Le texte a longtemps été attribué à Wauchier de Denain ; il a été écrit au début du XIIIe siècle pour Roger IV, châtelain de Lille. L'auteur annonce son projet de couvrir une période qui va de la Genèse à l'histoire contemporaine des Flandres, mais s'interrompt à la conquête de celles-ci par César. Il s'appuie donc sur l'histoire profane et sacrée, sur les historiens comme sur les mythographes, pour dresser un panorama qui retrace l'histoire ou la légende de différents peuples du monde connu. La date exacte comme le lieu de rédaction sont sujets à débat : certains spécialistes donnent une date antérieure mais la plupart avancent une période comprise entre 1208 et 1213 et en situent l'écriture dans le nord de la France ou à Saint-Jean d'Acre. Составлена в XIII веке в Северной Франции. «Древняя история» рассказывает о всемирной истории от Сотворения мира до Гая Юлия Цезаря, освещая, главным образом, события Троянской войны и историю Рима. Также содержит отрывки из Библии и других источников. Будучи часто копируемой, что влекло за собой неминуемые изменения и искажения, «Древняя история» была основательно отредактирована в XIV веке в Италии. В эпоху Ренессанса пользовалась большой популярностью. В рукописях XIV—XV веков часто совмещалась с сочинением «Деяния римлян». (ru)
