Considering actual needs and economic benefits, the National Development and Reform Commission approved the Datong-Xi'an railway project plan ("The National Development and Reform Commission's Response in relation to the Feasibility Study Report for the New Datong-Xi'an Railway") in 2009, allowing the construction of third and fourth tracks for passenger traffic from Datong to Yuanping next to the North Tongpu Railway, then under construction. The additional tracks were opened next to the original Hanyuan Railway in 2019 to connect with the new Dazhang high-speed railway. (en)
