- HMS H42 was a British H class submarine that sank with the loss of all 24 of its crew after an accidental collision in 1922. The sub was built by Armstrong Whitworth, Newcastle Upon Tyne. She was laid down in September 1917 and was commissioned on 1 May 1919. On 23 March 1922, under the command of Royal Navy Lieutenant Douglas Staley, H42 was practising torpedo attacks against British destroyers steaming off Europa Point, Gibraltar, when she surfaced unexpectedly only 30 or 120 yards (27 or 110 metres) – sources differ – ahead of the destroyer HMS Versatile. Versatile, making 20 knots, went to full speed astern on her engines and put her helm over hard to port, but had not yet begun to answer her helm when she rammed H42 abaft the conning tower, almost slicing the submarine in half. H42 sank with the loss of all hands. An investigation found H42 at fault for surfacing where she did against instructions. (en)

Sa quille est posée en septembre 1917 et il fut mis en service le 1er mai 1919. Le 23 mars 1922, le H42 s’entraînait à l’attaque à la torpille contre des destroyers britanniques qui croisaient au large de Europa Point, à Gibraltar, quand il a fait surface de façon inattendue à seulement 27 ou 110 mètres (les sources divergent sur la distance exacte) devant le destroyer , lancé à la vitesse de 20 nœuds. Le destroyer a fait « machine arrière toute » et a mis la barre à bâbord toute, mais il n’avait pas encore commencé sa manœuvre d’évitement quand il a percuté le H42 au niveau du kiosque, coupant presque en deux le sous-marin. Le H42 a coulé avec la perte de tout son équipage. Une enquête a révélé que le H42 était responsable de l’accident, ayant fait surface là où il l’avait fait en violation des instructions reçues pour l’exercice. (fr)

HMS H42 należał do serii okrętów typu H ze zmienioną konstrukcją. Po internowaniu części okrętów budowanych na zlecenie w Stanach Zjednoczonych zapadła decyzja o przeniesieniu produkcji do Wielkiej Brytanii. Od początku 1917 roku do końca 1920 roku w stoczniach Vickers, Cammell Laird, Armstrong Whitworth, Beardmore oraz HM Dockyard wybudowano 23 okręty tego typu. Okręt został zatopiony w czasie kolizji z niszczycielem w dniu 23 marca 1922 roku w okolicach Gibraltaru. Nikt z załogi pod dowództwem Lt. D.C. Sealya nie ocalał. (pl)
