- The governatore dei condannati ("commander of the convicts") was a senior commander of the navy of the Republic of Venice. The post initially headed the galley squadron manned by convicts and captives rather than free crewmen. Convicts (condannati) and Muslim captives began to be employed as rowers in the Venetian navy c. 1542, when the first institutions to administer them are also attested. The post of governatore dei condannati was also created at this time. The use of convicts to row the galleys increased over time, except for the flagships and the galeasses. Finally, as the number of galleys in the Venetian fleet diminished in favour of sailing ships of the line, after 1721 all Venetian galleys were exclusively manned by convicts. Like all squadron commanders of the rowed fleet (armata sottile)—the Provveditore d'Armata, the , and the Capitano in Golfo—he hoisted his ensign on a , with striped red-and-white sails and tents. As his distinctive signs, the flagship of the governatore dei condannati carried a single lantern and the standard of Saint Mark on a plain-topped staff aft, and on the foremast a square ensign of Saint Mark with an egg-shaped tail. His staff included a chancellor (cancelliere) or a secretary nominated by the Council of Ten, an adjutant (ammiraglio), a quartermaster (sopramasser), and a standard-bearer. For his personal service he had a head of household (maestro di casa), a steward (scalco), a cook (cuoco), a wine steward (canever), and two orderlies (fanti di pizzuol). In addition he had at his disposal a boat (felucca) with twelve boatsmen (caiccheri) and a rowed frigate with a captain (padrone), two steersmen (timonieri), two artillerymen (bombardieri) and 18 rowers (galeotti). - Il governatore dei condannati era un alto comandante della marina della Repubblica di Venezia istituito nel 1542 .Tale ruolo era al comando della ciurma della galera composto da detenuti e prigionieri piuttosto che da uomini di bordo liberi. Solamente a partire del 1542 i condannati e i prigionieri musulmani iniziarono ad essere impiegati come vogatori nella marina veneziana in maniera istituzionale creando la carica di governatore dei condannati. Nelle altre marine erano invece già in uso. L'uso di detenuti per remare le galee aumentò nel tempo, con l'eccezione delle navi ammiraglie e delle galeazze. Successivamente il numero delle galee con un importante uso dei remi all'interno della flotta veneziana diminuì a favore dei Vascelli. A partire del 1721 tutte le galee veneziane erano presidiate esclusivamente da detenuti (galeotti) Tutti i comandanti dell'armata sottile ossia il Provveditore d'Armata, il Capitano delle galeazze e il Capitano del Golfo issavano la propria bandiera su una galera bastarda, con vele a strisce bianche e rosse. Tra i segni distintivi, l'ammiraglia del governatore dei condannati portava una sola lanterna e lo stendardo di San Marco su un bastone a poppa, e sul primo piano un emblema quadrato di San Marco. Il governatore comandava un cancelliere o un segretario nominato dal Consiglio dei Dieci, un ammiraglio, un amministratore del cibo e della polvere da sparo (sopramasser), ed un portabandiera. Per il suo servizio personale aveva un governante (maestro di casa), un amministratore (scalco), un cuoco (cuoco), un amministratore del vino (canever) e due inservienti (fanti di pizzuol). Inoltre aveva a sua disposizione una barca (felucca) con dodici barcaioli (caiccheri) e una fregata a remi con un capitano (padrone), due timonieri, due artiglieri (bombardieri) e 18 rematori (galeotti).
