- Glycolether sind eine Stoffgruppe organischer Chemikalien, die auf Ethylenglycol oder Diethylenglycol als Basiseinheit basieren. Diese werden vorwiegend als Lösungsmittel, vor allem in Anstrichmitteln, sowie als Basis für Epoxydharze verwendet. Als Lösungsmittel haben Glycolether typischerweise die vorteilhaften Lösungsmitteleigenschaften von Ethern und Alkoholen niedrigerer Molekülmassen, jedoch höhere Siedepunkte, was für die Verarbeitung vorteilhaft ist. Das Markenzeichen „Cellosolve“ wurde 1924 als US-amerikanische Marke von Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corp (später Union Carbide) für „Solvents for Gums, Resins, Cellulose Esters, and the Like“ („Lösungsmittel für Gummis, Harze, Celluloseester und dergleichen“) registriert. Seit den 1970er Jahren verdrängen Propylenglycol-Derivate im industriellen Bereich zunehmend die Ethylenglycol-Produkte vom Markt. - Glycol ethers are a class of chemical compounds consisting of alkyl ethers that are based on glycols such as ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. They are commonly used as solvents in paints and cleaners. They have good solvent properties while having higher boiling points than the lower-molecular-weight ethers and alcohols. The name "Cellosolve" was registered in 1924 as a United States trademark by Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corporation (a divisionof Union Carbide Corporation) for "Solvents for Gums, Resins, Cellulose Esters, and the Like". "Ethyl Cellosolve" or simply "Cellosolve" consists mainly of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and was introduced as a lower-cost solvenet alternative to ethyl lactate. "Butyl Cellosolve" (ethylene glycol monobutyl ether) was introduced in 1928, and "Methyl Cellosolve" (ethylene glycol monomethyl ether) in 1929. Glycol ethers are designated "E-series" for or "P-series" for those made from ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, respectively. Typically, E-series glycol ethers are found in pharmaceuticals, sunscreens, cosmetics, inks, dyes and water-based paints, while P-series glycol ethers are used in degreasers, cleaners, aerosol paints and adhesives. Both E- and P-series glycol ethers can be used as intermediates that undergo further chemical reactions, producing glycol diethers and glycol ether acetates. P-series glycol ethers are marketed as having lower toxicity than the E-series. Most glycol ethers are water-soluble, biodegradable and only a few are considered toxic. One study suggests that occupational exposure to glycol ethers is related to low motile sperm count, a finding disputed by the chemical industry. (en)
- La dénomination éther de glycol couvre une famille de produits chimiques dont il existe plus de 80 dérivés ; une trentaine au moins étant produits et utilisés par l'industrie. En raison de leur toxicité, ils sont interdits dans les produits d'usages courants, mais ils restent très utilisés dans certains processus où ils sont substitués aux solvants habituels inflammables et/ou réputés plus nocifs encore. Ce sont en effet des solvants amphiphiles ; à la fois solubles dans l'eau et les graisses, ce qui leur confère des propriétés très particulières appréciées pour de nombreux usages techniques et industriels. Mais cette même propriété les rend contaminants pour les organismes vivants, animaux notamment. Certains ont une toxicité reconnue, notamment lors d'exposition en milieu industriel et pour certains métiers. Exemples d'éthers de glycol : 2-butoxyéthanol et 2-phénoxyéthanol. Dans les pays riches où ces produits sont omniprésents, la population générale en semble largement imprégnée, bien qu'à faibles doses. Ses effets chroniques sont mal évalués. (fr)
