Autore di 27 libri e più di 300 articoli scientifici. Suo padre, E. Glendon Gabbard, è stato a capo del Dipartimento delle Arti e del Teatro della Eastern Illinois University e sua madre, Lucina Paquet Gabbard, attrice. È stato presidente dell'American College of Psychiatrists dal 2006 al 2007. Ha ricevuto il "Mary Sigourney Award" nel 2000 per eccezionali contributi alla psicoanalisi.Dall'American Psychiatric Association riceve il "Distinguished Service Award" nel 2002, l'"Adolf Meyer Award" in 2004, e nel 2010 ha ricevuto il "Vestermark Award".
